Have a look at our hardware page.
Depends on the $$ you want to spend. The usb uirt is very well liked.

Is the usb uirt overkill for a receiver?

In some ways yes but it works flawlessly.
But many of the other products out there are excellent and less $$, especially if you don't need to transmit IR

I recommend IrMan. Worked flawlessly for me and Girder is shipped with a plugin for it. I only changed it because I needed transmit functionality to control my AV equipment. It's connected via the serial port. If you are in the UK let me know 'cos I still have it and could sell it to you and save you some £.

IRman is great. It is a great product, relatively cheap, works fine with Girder. Nice if you must use IR receiver (i.e yu want IR because you want to use your existing TV/DVD/ETC remote). But RF is much much better that IR imho. Just bought FireFly (RF) and it works great from a distance of 6-7 meters, and you don;t need to have visibility of the receiver unit at all! You don;t have to point the remote controller at the receiver device, it can work through wall, etc.
just my 2 crowns worth :-)
