Hi, I am onsidering purchasing a 8 inch lilliput touchscreen to be wall mounted for control of a music server via netremote, basically I will have a pc running windows 2003 server which wll hold all music and video files the only screen connected to it would be the lilliput (possibly two) and netremote would the interface permanetly but also could make adjustments to the server from there.
any thoughts on this type of system would be good
thanks

I have one. Its looks good at 800x600 and poor at 1024x768.
Touchscreen works well. Haven't got around to wall mounting...

do you know if it would be possible to use two or more from 1 pc like say output from pc to a vga spliiter then to each screen, how would the usb touch control work?
why is it poor at 1024, graphics too small?
thanks

i don't think 2 would work well... might be doable but i don't know.

How far can the touch screen be from the computer?
I'm thinking of connecting it to a mini-itx that is running fanless and has a wireless connection to the computer running JRMC.
The Mini-itx could fit in a cubby built between the wall studs.

Probably 15 or more feet.
I have a small xp embedded platform I am going to use.

I'm thinking about getting one. i think wall mounting one would have more wife acceptance factor than my current system of a Dell X5.
I have the computer running JRMC in a old stereo cabinet (looks like the old Hi-Fi units that were built like furniture) running headless and the only control is with the Dell X5 or using VNC from another computer. This wife acceptance factor is pretty low right now.
The wall mounted touchscreen seems like it would be more friendly for her to use.

you can get cat5 to usb converters and also cat5 to vga so distance is not really an issue, not sure if the unit is wall mountable straight out the box.

On ebay the 8" is about $90 to $100 more than 7" screen.
Is it worth paying the extra dollars for the touchscreen just for netremote?

I found one on ebay. Search for xp embedded :)
It works great and sold for about $250 I think.
I haven't seen the 7". I am guessing that 800x600 maybe too much for that resolution but I can't say for sure.

What about this 8" touchscreen monitor: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7951098571&category=38650
195 dollars for the monitor + 32 dollars shipping to the US.
I bought a similar monitor from Hongkong for the navigation setup my father's making in his sail boat (laptop inside the boat, an 8" monitor outside, in a box with a glass window). That looked surprisingly good.

mastiff I have purchased one of these screens and I must say the display at 800x600 is excellent and the touch is very responsive to both stylus (supplied) and fingertouch, In my opinion this would make an excellent fixed remote/media display wall mounting is not supported off the shelf but should not be a problem.
I was wondering however the vga cable is standard but with a usb breakout at the pc end was wondering if this could be extended using a standard vga extension cable (do these extensions have all pins wired) and also if it would be possible to have more than one screen connected to the same pc i.e vga output from video card into vga splitter box and all the usb cables just going to pc.
any thoughts on this would be apreciated

Glad you're happy with it! No idea about that. Oh, and you really should learn a bit about quoting...

With desktop sized LCDs dropping fast, I've some under $200 for a 17", and a touchscreen kit at just over $100, you can put together a 17" touchscreen LCD system for just over $300. Not much more than $100 but a HUGE difference in screen real estate.

Hi
How do you install a touchscreen kit to a normal lcd? and is it yourself that is selling them

Yeah, it's a lot bigger, but then that's not always better. I have considered building something into the coffee table, but that would have to be something a lot smaller.

My long range goal is to increase the WAF of netremote.
I think a LCD touchscreen would be ideal. Maybe mounting it vertically into the entertainment center or wall would be best.
I'm not sure on the size of the LCD. I would want to use Netremote for JRMC and use Meedio for the Wife to control the movies and tv shows that I've ripped.

@robertchasuk
you install the touchscreen directly on top of the LCD display. Here are a couple of sites that sell the kits. I'm sure they have instructions to review as well.

@mastiff <<Yeah, it's a lot bigger, but then that's not always better. >>
Depends on how you plan to use a large panel. It opens up a lot of new capabilities that are not practical on a small screen. On a larger screen you can do full screen web browsing with ease, stream media, scan sports results or news while watching a movie on the big screen, put a lot more functions on a single sreen avoiding having to tab tback and forth between small screens. Pages with lots of data can be shown together. For example, movie information cal show both front and back cover, pplot summary, and lots more info easily on a single page. Can't do that with a small panel.

I agree that a bigger screen has more use but I also agrre that it is harder to include in a system in your main room, for me the ideal size would be around 10 inches and this would be built into the wall and not just wall mounted, this would be fine for both netremote and meedio/mce use.
As for the touchscreen kits well this is intersting stuff to read but just a little to much of a pain to fit compared to purchasing one.
cheers

Well, I've got a 21" touch screen CRT monitor on top of the stereo cupboard in the living room, so I'm no stranger to big stuff. The point is just selecting the correct tool for the job.
