What i want to do is switch on/off a infrared device ie DVD player, from different rooms in a house. But most impotantly I need the girder software to know which room the remote was used in. Can girder do this?

I am planning on a full automation using 4 remotes[ 1 for each family member] . With a Infrared reciever in every room can Girder handle this sort of thing?

What is the best way? like is there a thread somebody can recommend , or am i better off using another software package?

I am after something really complex , but reall easy for the people with the remotes. I just thought id ask before spending hours getting nowhere.

Cheers

Depends on how you want to do this.

How are you going to connect the ir receivers to the pc? What kind of remotes? You may want 1 IR receiver and then use different remotes that girder knows about. Girder can handle many different IR receivers but usually not of the same brand.

re...How are you going to connect the ir receivers to the pc?
I am not sure , i was thinking of a cheap ir reciever wired via cat5 cable to a rs232 to a usb port. so i want one in each room, identifiable in software as room1,room2 etc

re... What kind of remotes?
dunno something that looks ok , something i can put a label under a button like PS2,dvd,pc,laptop etc

I cant do that , every member of the house has to have exactly the same remote.

if so then i am screwed ..aint i?

The important word in there is usually. :)

The Generic Serial Plugin supports as many individual RS-232 ports as you can attach to the PC. If you get a remote that is supported by this plugin (x10 Mouse Remote, for example) then it can mark each event with the port it came in on (room1, room2, etc.).

I'm pretty sure a receiver like the original UIR could be supported by this plugin as well. This would allow you to use most of the universal and/or programmable type of remotes.

These are just ideas.

Or you could use Glabal Cache and NetRemote for the perfect solution though a little more expensive. Search the NetRemote Forum for more info.

Look at my website. I do something similar: I have different IR remotes in the different rooms, so the signals are different. Very simple.
