View Full Version : NetRemote Designer Alpha information

Hello folks -
I will be sending individuals the NetRemote Designer alpha tomorrow morning (at or before 9am EST).
To successfully run the designer, it is necessary that you have downloaded and run NetRemote 1.0.20.0 on the machine you intend to run the designer on.
This version is to be considered alpha, as some important pieces of functionality are not yet implemented. The list of unimplemented items is long, and it should be - this is alpha software. I have used the designer to successfully design two interfaces to about 95%. I then moved the ccf into Tonto to finish up.
The following are some major unimplemented issues:
* Currently only one file at a time may be opened (you can not copy and paste between files)
* Undo only supported for move and resize, not other things (copy & paste, delete, etc.)
* No support for learned IR codes (plugin actions, delay, and jump are the only implemented actions thus far)
* Hardkeys for devices (called Page Groups in the designer) are not configurable.
* ID tag must still be used for special types (this will be handled much more smoothly so you don't have to worry about the details).
* Color schemes don't allow you to enter hex codes (RGB in decimal only) and don't allow for picking from a color onscreen.
* No reordering of actions within action designer.
To be an alpha/beta tester, you merely have to:
* Have a registered copy of NetRemote
* Be a member of the NetRemote forum
* Ensure that I have your email address
Even if I've told you that you are "in" for the alpha designer, please e-mail me so that I have your up-to-date email address to add to my alpha/beta mailing list. If you and I have not emailed before, please include your forum username so that I can properly identify you.

First impressions
Very nice - I particularly like the display of loops and the loop editor
I like the treeview too.
Dragging a window, e.g. the properties window shows a grey fuzzy outline - which appears to be the same shade of grey as the window background, ie it disappears completely.
The mouse wheel only scrolls the tree view/properties etc and not the editor
which is a bit unintuitive when the mouse is over the editor.
Selecting an item in the editor should select the corresponding item in the tree view.
Should avid's plugins show any children on the plugins tab?
There's some weird behaviour on the plugins tab - you can select an action e.g. "Force reconnect to Girder" but when you move the mouse the selection moves back to the previously selected action. However, you can make the selection persistent by right clicking on it while it's showing as selected.
These are all pretty minor - this is going to be a great tool.

The variables view is great - would be nice if it could show images too. Does slow NR down quite a lot though.
There's no protection against quitting with an unsaved CCF.
I had an interesting problem when using LDJ - I send the new interface to NR and it loads (occasionally the first time I do this it doesn't refresh the NR window completely, works if I do it again). This seems to cause all the usual startup things you'd expect, but none of the NR feedback works any more. Not quite sure why yet. I'm guessing that it thinks the client has disappeared.

Variables view is only updated from the instance of NR that was active when NR Designer is started. Shutting down NR and getting NR Designer to start it up again leaves the same set of variables that were there from the original copy.
It's fairly common in Girder apps (LDJ in particular) to create feedback labels of the form <basename><index> e.g. LDJ_DVD_Title_0
It would be good if the variables view was actually a tree view and could collapse these into a single heading. Or would it be better use a different form of label e.g. LDJ_DVD_Title[0]. The reason I noticed this is the sort order, which is strictly alpha which of course shows LDJ_DVD_Cover_1, then LDJ_DVD_Cover_10 to 19 and then LDJ_DVD_Cover_2 etc. It looks a bit odd as it stands.
Column widths are not persistent
The designer seems to assume that the correct font to use is Pronto.ttf - rather than using the one specified in the running copy of NR.

Exited from NR, then Sent the CCF to NR from the menu. NR starts up.
Double clicked on a button in Designer and got this :-
See the end of this message for details on invoking

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine

Thanks for the awesome feedback, Rob! Let me digest these, and implement changes as required in the designer.

Are the alignment and spacing buttons supposed to work in this version?
It would be nice to have the keyboard shortcuts shown on the context menus.
I've discovered that F2 seems to bring up the properties dialog.
The NR emulator doesn't support the exit action - have to use the close box
On the plugins page the actions are shown in alphabetical order, but on the actions tab for a button they're shown in IR code order.

Should avid's plugins show any children on the plugins tab?
Not quite yet. I had use of an early version of Designer a couple of weeks ago, but had to request some additions to the interface by which a driver describes its actions. Ben says these are in the pipeline. So until I get those, I can't produce a self-describing driver.
But beware - the preferred IR coding for many of the AvidUtils things (in particular text and drop-downs) *will change*. Actions in existing CCFs will continue to work but will not be easily editable. The actions will have new *preferred* IR codes as alternatives to the existing "legacy" codes which will be deprecated. So it will probably be necessary to delete AvidUtils actions and to re-insert them in order to get a good editing experience.

I'm not quite clear what purpose the emulator serves.
You seem to be able to add buttons and frames using it.
Rob H
February 9th, 2005, 11:12 AM
Cut (from the context menu) doesn't seem to do anything. Copy and delete works though.
Paste sort of works, but won't paste into a frame.
Paste and delete don't always refresh the tree view

Paste and delete don't always refresh the tree view
You appear to need to delete two items to get the tree view to refresh. In the interim that last button to be deleted is still shown and can be edited in the property editor.

Ben,
Thanks very much, I like the look of the new designer. It looks like it should be a lot easier to use.
I have just used the resizing feature, it worked well. I now have a ccf for my Dell X50v that is complete.
I have to build a new ccf for it thou so, am looking forward to trying out the designer proper then. Matbe I find something Rob has'nt!

Resizing frames - looks like this can only be done in the properties dialog at the moment. Resizing with the mouse is pretty much essential
Something else just occurred to me that could be quite useful for loops - have a setting to let the frame resize itself to fit the contents. As you change the number of repetitions and the spacing, or indeed the contents. Doesn't have to be dynamic, could just be an button on the loop properties dialog.

Ah thanks. Ben just said that 1.0.20 needs to have been installed an run first but "The designer will start NetRemote (if not already running) in order to get a list of loaded plugins and variables.". Now I've manually opened NR it works. Cheers Rob.

There doesn't seem to be a way to remove an image completely from a button or frame. You appear to be able to do it by selecting an slot from the image picker, but that leads to an exception :-

The image picker resizes all graphics to fit the slot. It shouldn't do this if the graphic is small enough to fit in the space available, and it certainly should use the same aspect ratio when resizing as all rectangular buttons end up showing as square.

There doesn't seem to be a way to create a colour scheme with a transparent background - and system|properties doesn't have a transparent colour.

When you paste an object the newly pasted object should be selected in the treeview and in the editor. At the moment it's selected in neither.
Rob H
February 11th, 2005, 02:46 AM
The top level macro group doesn't seem to be supported - NRD moved all my macro panels to the standard page group. However, at some point it didn't fix up the references so all the buttons that were aliased the macros no longer worked. I think that this may have happened when I saved the CCF since it worked okay if I just sent the CCF to NR.
If a macro group isn't supported then you need to be able to designate a page group as a macro group so that the macro template can be applied to it

Same here. I have been holding off starting my ccf until it was available. I am really interested in the resizing capabilities since I need my CCF for both the x50 and x50v. I don't mind If it is only alpha, I would just like to get something started.

Questions answered
01) Should avid's plugins show any children on the plugins tab?
- Yes, Avid needs some changes on my side before he fully implements his descriptions.
Can you send be a brief description of the changes to the XML description encoding and its new attributes? Doing this change (and getting designable drivers distributed) is top of my list.
Thanks

This is still the case.

The various property dialogs only have OK buttons - there should be a cancel button.
Esc works to close the dialog though, but I get a beep when it does.
The Element dialog doesn't have a close box.
Rob H

Selecting an item in the editor should select the corresponding item in the tree view.
This almost works, but only if the tree view is showing the element, ie the containing frame is already expanded. In fact, the corresponding item in the tree view has to be visible - if it's off the top or bottom of the File Navigation pane then the selection doesn't change either.
Rob H
February 23rd, 2005, 01:27 AM
F2 to select the properties for the current element only works when the File Navigation pane is displayed. If e.g. the plugins pane is showing then F2 does nothing.

Image Picker:
Much better. What's the sort order used here? Would be good to have images sorted by size perhaps?
The Remove Image button seems to be anchored to the right hand side of the window - if you resize the window to make it narrower then the Remove Image button disappears off the left hand side.
Escape doesn't close the dialog - although it's nice to see that there is a Cancel button here :)
Rob H

SchemePicker
1) Dialog title needs a space :)
2) The background colour button displays the dialog for both left and right mouse clicks. When the dialog closes the Set Transparent context comes up.
This seems a bit strange. Might be better to have the dialog only appear for a left mouse click and the context menu for a right mouse click
3) White text on a transparent background - not surprisingly this shows as completely blank in the scheme list :) Might be a good idea to show the background as a graphic or maybe a gradient. Either that or show the scheme name in conventional colours and then have a sample in the chosen colours.

Resizing frames - this is very tricky to do. It does work, but the mouse cursor should change to a suitable one. Either that or draggable handles in the corners and middle of each side would be good.

Rob H

Selection frame:
If you have a button that is covered by another button then the selection frame for the button at the back is obscured by the button in front. This can make it hard to see the selection. I noticed this particularly in my LDJ CCF which uses an alpha transparent picture frame which overlays the cover image. The non-transparent part completely covers the red selection frame.

Rob H
February 23rd, 2005, 02:48 AM
'Cut' doesn't seem to do anything - using any of the 4 methods of activating it.
Edit: Later...
That's not quite true, it just doesn't work the way I'd expected. It seems to be a 'pending' cut, ie it only moves when you paste it.
Some sort of visual indication of this would help, e.g. ghosting the element
Edit: Later...
Cut followed by paste on the same panel leaves 'ghosts' of the original elements in the tree view

Font selection - there's a bit of weirdness here. If you select one of the following point sizes :- 10, 16, 22, 28 then the Font shown in the Element dialog is one pt less ie 9, 15, 21 and 27. It works as you'd expect for all other point sizes.
You probably shouldn't be able to select other fonts and non-standard sizes yet, ie until there's a new CCF format.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.
however, if I don't make any changes and click save I get no error
Rob H

Interesting - I don't get that. The save appears to work correctly, but I do get the following message (centred on NetRemote).
This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem.
The dialog is titled 'Server Busy'
Pressing the 'Switch To...' button brings up the Windows Start menu. The Retry button lets it complete but doesn't result in the Windows Start menu.
Similarly, giving focus to NR and then back to NRD gets rid of the dialog.
Also, the mouse cursor doesn't change to a busy cursor for several seconds.
I moved the NetRemote window and the dialog still comes up centred over it.

How big is the CCF now?
Rob H

Save As:
This should really make a copy of the associated Lua file.
Come to think of it, it would be useful to be able to edit the associated Lua within NRD.

Can you send be a brief description of the changes to the XML description encoding and its new attributes? Doing this change (and getting designable drivers distributed) is top of my list.
Sorry, this response was from before I made the changes to support what we talked about.
The xml additions are "delimiter" and "comment_delimiter". It will use the delimiter value to delim between params, and "comment_delimiter" to be able to add/keep a comment at the end of the whole action. Everything else should work as is.

Thanks Ben,
The embedded text and separator stuff seem to work fine.
A couple of issues:
1) Are you planning to add "default" and "optional" attributes as we discussed earlier? Without "default" the interface is a bit clumsy as the text description has to mention the default value to help the poor designer user. Without "optional", existing CCFs are more difficult to parse. A parsing rule that would work would be "if the end of the string is reached and only optional parameters are left, then the parse is successful, with the optional parameters having default values". Ideally, you would also omit from the IR string all trailing optional parameters which have default values.
2) Bit field parameters are not parsed to initialize the check boxes - they all start out unchecked.
I attach a "work in progress" PC/Win32 AvidUtils driver to experiment with. Beware that the IR encodings for strings and drop-down are new. "Legacy" codes in existng CCFs continue to work in NR but can't be properly edited with Designer.

1) Are you planning to add "default" and "optional" attributes as we discussed earlier?
Yes, sorry. "optional" is there (value of 1 = optional) on a parameter. I'll add default now. Optional was also in the past rev so forgot to mention it.
My thought with default is to only use the default on first action create. If the IR code (current) doesn't have values, then to leave them blank.
2) Bit field parameters are not parsed to initialize the check boxes - they all start out unchecked.
Ah! This makes sense! I'll fix ASAP. Thanks for the heads up.

My thought with default is to only use the default on first action create. If the IR code (current) doesn't have values, then to leave them blank
This makes sense, but it would be nice if it also interacted "sensibly" with "optional", so that if an optional value is not there, then the dialog shows the default value.

Another drawing problem and a suggestion:
When my menu buttons use Pronto graphic characters (e.g. for Zoom transport), the tree display gets *some* of them right, but for most of them just displays a lacuna (a litle square box character).
And should the order of driver actions displayed in the action designer tree be specified by the order they were registered in the driver, instead of being alphabetical? That way, the driver could group related things together.

You put it in Windows\Fonts? Did you "install" it? (I think you have to right-click and do install or something?). Additionally you can put it in the same directory as the designer, I believe.
Dan - I was able to successfully open, save, and reopen in NetRemote, so perhaps it was a one-time fluke? Can you try again?
All - I'm working on some of the deeper issues here, and you should see a release in the next week with corrections.
Thanks again for all the useful feedback, Rob.
Anyone successfully designing a CCF using this, yet?

Found out today that you can open two or more copies of the designer at once. This really slows NetRemote down! It's a bit sluggish when you have one copy open as it is, but this was way over the top.

My guess is that this is related to the variables being kept real-time in the designer.
I'll test the theory, and if so, add an option to "refresh every [x] seconds, refresh realtime, or refresh on demand".
Just so you all know, I'm making a lot of changes (to support OK, Cancel) and other things. Progress is being made, and I'll have something available soon.

I am tring to start the designer on my new pc, and I get the following application error.
The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application.

Just a thought, let me check if I have .net installed
danward79
March 13th, 2005, 12:06 PM
Ok I installed .Net1.1, just to make sure now I get a different error on startup
I have NR running, and if I try and start the designer I get...
Netremote.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xfd0 (4048), Thread id=0x2a4 (676).
Any ideas how I can get round this? I need to scale up some changes I made to my ccf for 480 x 640

Okay, it's not a trust issue then. :(
Is that with any CCF loaded in NR?
That's one for Ben probably.
Rob H
March 13th, 2005, 12:41 PM
You may need to install the .NET SDK and one of the debugging tools (cordbg or dbgclr) there may tell you where the problem is
danward79
March 13th, 2005, 12:42 PM
yep nr was loaded with a ccf
Rob H
March 13th, 2005, 12:46 PM

I will have to try and download that tomorrow, I did try debugviewer, and nothing showed

I have tried as rob suggested however this did not show anything that would lead me to a conclusion.

Yes, you should have a "Designer.log" in the startup directory. Can you open that up and send it to me?

Weird drag and drop behaviour
Open a panel with some objects.
Select one of the objects in the File Navigator - now drag the object from the navigator over the editing window. As soon as the mouse cursor hits the edge of the editing window the selected object will move - quite possibly out of the window completely.
After you've done this - and probably hit Ctrl-Z to undo, any frames in the current panel will lose their resize handles. Switching to another panel and back again will restore them
Rob H
March 26th, 2005, 02:23 AM
It's not possible to create a multiline button label with embedded carriage returns since the Element Name is a single line edit control
Multiline button labels with embedded CRs are not drawn correctly in the editor. Using Middle Center alignment only the last line is drawn centred, the first line is left aligned.
Rob H
March 26th, 2005, 02:26 AM
The 'Show Name' checkbox in the Element editor isn't reflected correctly on the corresponding button. This is the case even when you OK the dialog. It's not until you click on the button that it is repainted appropriately.
The same goes for the font size.
Rob H
March 26th, 2005, 02:34 AM
There's no way to select the parent of the current object other than from the file navigator. A keyboard shortcut would be handy here.
Actually, that isn't strictly true - if the file navigator has focuse then cursor left will select the parent.
Even worse, if you have two panels open and use the mouse to change to another panel then the cursor keys switch between open panels!
This isn't exactly ideal, or indeed consistent.
It would be better IMO if the cursor keys could be used to move the selected object in pixel increments.

Ok I have confirmed NR is running and working and I get the same error. I tried this with several ccf's
I also tried it on my htpc with the same ccf's and it works fine.
I have tried alsorts, searched the net etc, it is just not working!

Sorry Ben,
I still can't get Designer to accept a CCF file containing AvidUtils text actions. I can create an action and write out the CCF. But when I come to re-open the CCF, the action reverts to a plain IR code that I can do nothing with. I have attached a distribution with the DLLs, the source (actions registrations are at the end) up-to-date documentation of the action encoding and a sample CCF.
Any ideas? Obviously I want to get a version of AvidUtils that will work - before you release a public beta.

March 29th, 2005, 11:24 AM
Dan,
I got the same sort of issue but more "localized".
On the HTPC, everything is working OK in the designer.
On my dev laptop, the designer works OK but crashes as soon as I want to edit the actions associated with a button.
On the laptop, I had .Net 1.0 with fix, 1.1 with fix and 2.0Beta.
I uninstalled 2.0Beta but this did not change anything.
I'll take a look on the HTPC tomorrow to check what's installed there.
danward79
March 29th, 2005, 12:02 PM
You could have a point there, actually, I think the HTPC has 1.0 on it... I will check too later
danward79
March 29th, 2005, 01:26 PM
It does not like a 1.0 .net install!
My HTPC has 1.1
ebariaux
March 30th, 2005, 04:25 AM
Indeed, I checked and my HTPC only has the 1.1 installed.
Now, I'm a bit afraid to just remove the .Net 1.0 from my laptop as some stuff might depend on it.
When I got a bit more time, I'll take a complete disc image, remove .Net 1.0 and test NRDesigner there.

You specifically mean the text actions, right? I see that they're not loading, but want to make sure everything else is working.
I'm digging in now to figure out why they're not coming in appropriately, though.

Thanks Ben,
Yes - I specifically mean the text actions. My guess is it is because these actions have a couple of rarely used optional parameters, which are (correctly I believe) omitted when the IR code is constructed, but they seem to prevent the code then being correctly parsed.

Hi Dan - I took your post above to mean that you had this working.
The designer only needs .NET 1.1, but the installer should download and install that if you need it.
Is it possible that you're running this off of a network drive, or some other area where .NET is saying it's not "safe"?

Hi Ben,
It is all running of my c: drive, I am lost. Other .net apps work such as mediaportal no problems.
I have tried it will the designer running in the root or c: drive and on the desktop, neither made a difference.
What are the requirements from windows for the designer, i.e. which services, etc?

Yes - I specifically mean the text actions. My guess is it is because these actions have a couple of rarely used optional parameters, which are (correctly I believe) omitted when the IR code is constructed, but they seem to prevent the code then being correctly parsed.
I found the problem! Parameters from the PluginAction object are int (32 bit), but the designer stores them like the IR code, which is a short (16 bit). So it was comparing 0xFFFF (short = -1) to 0x0000FFFF (int = 65535). Casting properly to a short solved it. Everything looks great now!

Also, what did you think of the earlier idea of presenting the actions in driver-specified order (order of registration) instead of alphabetically?

Sorry about this Ben!
I am still having problems with ccf's being corrupted, when I save a change, I then get an error and I can choose continue or quit, either way I end up with a ccf that is unusable

Hi Dan - Is it any save, or just when changing the resolution?
Regarding image picker : Did you add any images, or just use what came with your ccf? Is this still the ccf you send me last?

Hi Ben,
It is anysave.
No I did not add any images, just what was in the ccf
Ben S

Hi Dan -
Using the ccf downloadable from here, I reproduced the bug during image selection and resolved it.
I can save this image (without error) and open it again in NetRemote. Is there something else I should be after opening to check?

Hi Ben,
At work right now, but off hand I remember if you try setting the template for a page and then try saving it should cause a problem.
If not when I get home I will do a step by step
Thanks

Has anyone noticed that their fonts were sized differently when loaded into the new editor? In Tonto and Netremote the fonts for Now Playing are fine but when I load it into the new editor they are all a bit larger which messes up the formatting.

John - I think I may have found the issue. I'm going to download your interface and see if it looks correct.

I've just had what appears to be the same problem as Dan when saving a CCF.
It's a very simple CCF with two normal buttons and a progress bar. It shows up completely blank in Tonto and NR Designer, but it causes NR itself to start consuming memory and CPU (it got up to 520Mb or so before I killed it).

Did this error out when saving? Do you have a copy of this saved, before it became this?
Rob H
April 17th, 2005, 10:56 AM
No error I'm afraid.
It appeared to save normally.
It was pretty similar to the other progress bar example that I uploaded earlier, but was entirely created in the Designer from scratch.
Ben S
April 17th, 2005, 10:59 AM
Okay, the "error" is fixed in NetRemote (NetRemote expected at least a home device).
However now we have three programs (Tonto, Designer, NetRemote) that think the file is "empty".
Did you create this file "from scratch"?
Rob H
April 17th, 2005, 11:05 AM
Yes, entirely from scratch - using File|New
Incidentally, that left the title bar showing the name of the previously loaded file, rather than changing it to untitled.
Ben S
April 17th, 2005, 06:16 PM
Okay, I've fixed the issue making the save not work properly for a new file, and also fixed the issue with the title not changing on new.
Not sure if this is the problem you were having, though, Dan.

Hi Ben,
The layout in Designer (especially cropping/wrapping) differs from that in NR and Tonto. See the attached screen shots. The "DVD" at the top left is a simple text frame. It appears fine in Tonto, but is cropped by Designer.
Any ideas?

I was using the progress bar ccf example you uoloaded for Rob.

Hi Ben,
Glad you found it.
Next!
I just created a new file, via File>New. I then went to system file properties and changed the size from 240 x 320 to 480 x 640. I then went to file>save as, and tried to save as "nrdesignertest". That resulted in this error.

If you start the designer and it does not find the file that was last loaded in NR, then it hangs on the splashscreen for a Looooooooong time.

I then went to file>save as, and tried to save as "nrdesignertest".

Got another aswell,
If you start the designer and it does not find the file that was last loaded in NR, then it hangs on the splashscreen for a Looooooooong time.
Ah! What you can't see is that NetRemote is prompting you to open a file, but it's hidden behind the splash page. Isn't that convenient. I'll have to remove the TopMost on the splash.

Ben,
What is the likelyhood of being able to open up more than one ccf at a time?
Do you have a plan to add this feature?
jwilson56
April 23rd, 2005, 08:33 AM
Ben
I have been playing around with the editor and Now Playing. Here is a list of features I hope make it back into the final editor (some of which you have mentioned yourself). Most of these were in Tonto and I came to depend on them.
Add the 'copy icons' to a right click over a button.
Add 'copy actions' to a right click over a button.
Holding down the 'CTRL key' would make copy of button or frame.
Add the X, Y , H, W numbers back along the bottom of the screen. I live by those numbers.
Add the ability for the 'arrow keys' to move the graphics around for fine tuning of the interface.
Add the ability for the graphic library viewer to let you delete ANY image. It would be useful in eliminating duplicate images. Of coarse you would have to go back and re-pick an image for any button that lost their graphics but it would be easier then trying to figure out which ones are the duplicates.
One you mentioned that would be sorely missed. The ability to have multiple CCF's open to allow cutting and pasting between them. I doubt we could live without this feature...hehehe
Now some of the features I do like (to add some balance... hehehe)
The new alignment tools (would be even better with the X, Y, W, H displayed)
The tree structure. Heck I was able to 'clean-up' my Now Playing project (frames on frame that didn't need to be that way were impossible to see in Tonto and a few hidden buttons not used). I saved 40% in the filesize after cleaning the project. Not sure why the file shrunk so much as I only found a few small buttons not used, but its nice to see the size smaller. It would be nice (if possible) if you could change the posistion of the items (up or down) within the tree so you could organize it better by grouping the buttoms and frames. The tree structure allowed me to see what needed to be 'cleaned-up' and made the job much easier and grouping them would make that even easier.
The Toggle Visibility. With all my pop-ups this was a big plus for me!
Keep up the good work.
:D
John
Oh BTW I crashed the designer a few times while doing the clean-up. I will attach the log file if it helps. Most involved renaming and moving items

Thanks for the feedback, John.
We're focusing on the MediaBridge for the next week or two so that we can roll that out, and then we will refocus on getting the designer out for public beta as well as making many of the suggested changes.
jwilson56
April 25th, 2005, 04:23 PM
Well first couple crashes were not fun as it made the CCF totally corrupt and I had to redo the changes. I learned my lesson and backed up before any many changes. The editor didn't like me messing with the frames (like copying all the items from a child frame to the parent frame to get rid of the child one) and would crash. I finally used Tonto to do that work and then the new editor to clean up the rest.

Not sure it's really the designer itself...
In the action designer, when using the "MediaBridge.Execute a protocol command" action, in the command dropdown, both X NEXT and X PREV have "Next track" as the label.
Also STOP appears 2 times in the dropdown (both as X STOP command).

I can say one thing.... the new designer does not like you messing with the frames. It will crash most of the time.
Also I can't seem to be able to resize the frames with the mouse.

I found a few issues relating to deleting items that would bomb the designer when saving. I wonder if this is what's happening here?
I'm not ready to release the next version yet (I'm mid development), but it's running stable for me now (though with only one file loaded). I did 99.9% of the new music interfaces in the designer (used Tonto to cut and paste some buttons).
So multiple files is important, and will be added to the next release (coming soon).
jwilson56
May 1st, 2005, 06:52 AM
I suspect that it was was bombing for me while trying to save the file. I also have been using a combo of Tonto and the new designer to do the carpc interface. I look forward to the new release.

Weirdness with pasting buttons onto frames.
If you select a frame, and paste some buttons onto it, the designer seems to think that the frame owns the button, but NR and Tonto don't!
See the attached CCF which has a looped frame which apparently owns two buttons. However the buttons are not replicated.
Ah, just worked out what's going on - you can of course only have one object in a looped frame. Perhaps a warning might be helpful, or even some way of creating a frame for a set of objects (like the group function in Tonto).
Rob H
May 5th, 2005, 08:06 AM
I was trying to save my CCF and something caused NR to crash (no log I'm afraid).
As a consequence of this NRD couldn't save the file - complaining about no RPC Server.
Restarting NR didn't help.
Why does NRD need NR to save a CCF? If it really does need NR then it has to be able to reconnect if a new instance of NR is started.
Ben S
May 8th, 2005, 06:24 PM
Hi Rob - The designer "auto-reloads" the interface file if you're designing the ccf that is "loaded" (perhaps it should prompt whether you want to do this or not), and you're right it should get past this bump (forcing NetRemote to restart if necessary).
We're converting the designer over to use multiple files, so we'll fix this as part of that change.
Yes, the problem with scheme names is that they don't exist in the interface file (so it really should be hidden/disabled until the new file format is available).
jwilson56

Not sure if this was posted yet but when I tried to change the font color on one frame label it changed all the lables to that color.
John
Ben S
May 17th, 2005, 06:32 PM
John - this is intentional. If you want to change just that one, you need to create a new "scheme" and change it's color.
The idea being that if you want to change all frame colors, and they share a "scheme" you can change them all in one swoop.

I'm having two problems immediately...
1) when I go to delete a screen, approx 30% of the time it deletes the entire device... yes, I'm positive the screen is highlighted.
2) When I try to 'Save' or ' Save as' my CCF I get an error message. See attached file JPG. This only happens with my CCF, not others.

Hi Ben,
In most apps, I find I heavily use context menus. And I really miss these in Designer. So I would love to see Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Insert action, etc in all places in the tree (and in the panel UI) where it could be appropriate. Also, the properties box that appears on double click should also be accessible from the context menu.

If I Cut or Copy a button or frame, when I paste it in the same or different panel, the pasted object is offset by a few pixels down and to the right. So I can't trivially paste an object into the same place on a number of panels.
This is made worse by the lack of a "snap-to" grid. In Tonto, I use a 5 pixel grid for alignment, which makes it very quick to line up buttons by eye.

My CCF often has a number of buttons that do the same thing - on the same or different panels. So a Copy Actions & Paste Actions (on the tree or UI display) would help a lot. I use these often in Tonto.

if I delete all my templates, when I create a new page, in a current Page Group or a brand new Page Group... the master template is always used... but it is deleted... huh?
I had 3 templates and it seems the master template stays like a ghost and is used even when it does not exist. This is some serious magic.

It would appear that short cut's for copy and paste do not work in the ID tag, or any other of the text boxes in button properties

Ben,
Another problem, sorry!
If I make a new file, then goto system, file properties and change the res to 480 x 640 press ok etc, then go to master template and open it to add a frame, the page is at 240 x 320 see attached pic.
However, it does not seem to effect the home page view etc, it just does not show everything in the template view.

Hi guys -
I'm heading out for a few days, but you'll be receiving an email from me shortly with the new link. There are other issues you guys mentioned which are not yet resolved. My intention is to try to release weekly to ensure you guys have more to play with.
0.7.1.0 (24-Jun-2005)
1. Fixed - Cut and delete leaving previous item selected
2. Fixed - Error when saving CCF if using Timer, Device, or HardKey alias
3. Fixed - Issue when changing size not always repainting master template
4. Fixed - A few other small issues
5. Added - Options to draw and snap to grid. It is set to 10 pixels right now, and is not yet editable
6. Added - NetRemote Variable Inspector - shows all NR variables in an organized layout (from Tools menu)
7. Added - Many context menus have the proper items on them
8. Added - Copy and paste action groups
9. Added - Quick access to name and position in lower portion of designer
10. Added - Right click menu to close document tab

Cool!
If I can make one suggestion on the GUI for the items... can you condense the pop-up screen so that we do not need to open 3 windows to get to everything like the IR codes and such... too many levels, IMO.
What would really be nice is having a GUI like with VS where the properties 'sheet' is in a docked panel... this would be sweet for easy access, just highlight an item and access the properties.

The variable inspector has gone - clearly replaced by the Tools|NetRemote Variable inspector.
Unfortunately you've apparently missed out an assembly from the install - Lyquidity.Controls.ExtendedListViews

sorry if this isnt the right place but i just wanted to say ive been using netremote for as while and decided to try out the designer this week for the first time. i had tried tonto but lost patience quickly. I love it, it seems to work well and is easy for people like me to use. yeah it crashes every now and then but it hasnt bothered me too much and now im getting ccfs that i want instead of relying on others. i didnt realise it could be this easy with girder and usbuirt and netremote. thanks very much, keep up the good work.

Hi guys - I just returned.
I realized about a half hour out on the road that I hadn't included the new file in the installer for the Variable Inspector. Argh!
I've attached the file you need here, just drop it in the directory with everything else and you should be good to go.
Aaron - is the save error with the CCF you sent me?
Ben S
June 26th, 2005, 11:03 AM
Also, when posting the output exception info, can you guys possibly attach the output as a text file so as to not clog up the thread? It makes it a lot easier for me to read that way.

Thanks Ben, that works much better.
Could we have the refresh button on the variable inspector window?
I like the tree view - possibly an option to have it open in an unexpanded state?
While I'm on the variable inspector did the old version have a context menu to copy the name and value to the clipboard? Or am I thinking of Girder 4?
Could we also have the tree treat _ as a path indicator in the same way that the period is?

Could we have the refresh button on the variable inspector window?
Absolutely.
I like the tree view - possibly an option to have it open in an unexpanded state?
Potentially. If it makes more sense to stay unexpanded, I can have it start unexpanded.
While I'm on the variable inspector did the old version have a context menu to copy the name and value to the clipboard? Or am I thinking of Girder 4?
I think Girder 4. I didn't do anything specifically to make this possible.
Could we also have the tree treat _ as a path indicator in the same way that the period is?
Sure. I'll add the option.
Thanks Rob!

One other thing about the variable inspector - how about an option for it to stay on top, or failing that a shortcut key to open it.
Oh, and a bug report
If you double click on the header separator to the right of the Value column you get the following error
