Unfortunately, XP's shutdown.exe does the same thing (display's the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" graphic  )

you could try to use WinXP's shutdown.exe . shutdown -? gives you some options.

I've used the Shutdown command on the OS tab without any problems in Win98 but now in WinXP it doesn't work. It shutdowns Windows but doesn't power off my PC (shows a message that states that it's now safe to turn off my PC). It's strange because from the StarMenu->TurnOffComputer the PC shuts down all the way.
Can somebody confirm or deny this?

I also made ugly programs for shutting down Win98 but haven't modified them to work in NT like OS (WinXP) yet (if suppose I can ). Can somebody check if there is such a problem in Win2k?
Ron will you have a look at this?

The workaround for me it to just use keyboard keys within a multigroup to shutdown XP, such as 'window key, arrow up one, enter', etc. etc. etc.

Long way around, but it works.

PS: the key is to use lots'o'wait commands

I was wondering about this program I always used in combination with Motherboard monitor to shut my PC in case of abnormal voltages or high temperatures

It's called Shutdown Now, it's a real ugly program but it works even in windows Xp overhere. (And judging by the website the new version isn't nice too ...)

get it at www.dworld.de

and I'm sure there are a lot of other little programs that can do this. At least I've used some in w98 about two years back...

until Ron gets it working in girder that is... ahem, sorry.

Check out http://grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm. Steve Gibson has recently written a really cool commandline assembly program that takes full advantage of Windows power management - and does it properly. Looks like the perfect power management tool for Girder.
