Best thing to do is start small. That is start with makeing Girder send keypresses to notepad, see how that works ( this is explained in the helpfile ) slowly work your way to more difficult examples. There is a 'slight' learning curve but once you get over that its all easy

I think the packard bell needs the Igor plug:

There is a dot (filled circle?) in the bottom right corner of Girder. If it is blue in color, you need to enable the hardware devices. (F9)

If you get a messagebox that says something like "no input devices selected, please select one first in the settings dialog" then you need to do what it says.

Use the menu entry called "file" and choose "settings". On the settings dialog, choose the "Hardware Plugins" tab. The box in the middle contains all the hardware devices that you have plugins for. Place a check next to the one that corresponds to your IR receiver and press APPLY. Hightlight the device and press settings. Change the plugin settings for your device (right com port or whatever) and press OK. Press OK to dismiss the settings dialog. Press F9 to enable the device and the dot on the Girder application should turn green.

Your remote should now work.

By the way, welcome to Girder!

I'm glad your remote is now working.

A word of warning about the Packard Bell remote: Because of the way the hardware is designed, along with not using a device driver designed specifically for the remote, the Igor plugin seems to take a large amount of CPU cycles to get the data from it. This can cause hesitations in other programs (video and sound players are most likely to show this problem) when you press a button. I hope you don't see this particular problem but be aware that it can exist.

The easiest way to learn Girder is to download one of the available .gir files in te exported groups section (http://www.girder.nl/exportgr.php) and import them into Girder. To learn a command to react to your remote, just press the 'learn' button and then the button on your remote. That's it  .

You may have to adjust certain settings in the existing groups, such as the location of your programs. Then you will start learning Girder by doing.

Wykat

p.s. I'm assuming you have installed and activated your IR receiver.

There is a type of led on the botton right side which should be green, indicating that your serial receiver is working. If it is yellow, the device is not activated. Secondly this LED should change color when you transmit data. This is how you can check if your receiver is working properly

Wykat

ps. With F9 you can activate the port

I have downloaded girder and checked the help files, but I don't understand how to program my computer to understand the commands from the remote. I really want to get my remote to work, but I need help. Please anybody, sorry if this seems ridiculous.

If by installing my ir reciever and activated it you mean plugging it into the serial port, I have done that. I am trying what you said with the exports, but I nothing is happening when I hit the button on the remote. I checked the com port in my device manager, and everything is working fine. Is there something else I need to do?

Ok, I tried the settings and F9 thing and the dot turns yellow and then turns red saying "could not enable input devices".
I have a packard bell remote and I am not sure if I enabled the right hardware plugin in the settings section. I put a check next to the UIR/IRman and the NEC/AST/IBM options. I hope these are the right selections, sorry for my ignorance!Hahaha, thanks again.

Ok guys, I got it working and have used some of the export groups. This is awesome! Not only is it the best program I have atttempted to use, it actually works with windows xp, and you guys provided quality help. Thanks so much! I love this program and I would highly recommend it to anyone. And on top of that it is free. Much credit to those who created it!

Ok, I am having trouble getting the functions for loading a program to work. I can get all the functions within a program to work great, but I cannot get the remote to actually load the program. I get an error that says: Windows cannot find C:/multimed/powerdvd/powerdvd.exe. How can I fix this? With other programs, such as musicmatch jukebox, I don't get an error, but when I press the button programmed to load mmjb, nothing happens.

I have the same packard bell remote, and am having the same problems. I am using a laptop, and have the IR reciever on com 1, and i know it is connected correctly, because i have also installed UICE and have made that work with it, but since it is a POS program, i am tryin to get girder to work. I am good with computers, but i have NO idea about this thing. Im not sure which input devices to enable, but ive tried all of them, and nothing has worked. When i chose some of them, it look like it will work after i hit F9, and it says, "device enabled", but when i try to make a command, and press the "learn" button, i point the remote and the reciever and press the corresponding button, nothing happens. i would greatly appreciate any help. if you would rather contact me over AIM, my screen name is Ardillero and i have an away message up usually, so im on 24 hours a day. Please help me.
