Ruud,

I hope you're still working on the PS/2 solution. The main advantage is that it can be used for power up a PC without requiring cabling directly to the mainboard  .

Hi all,

OK, I have the hardware and firmware of the PS2 UIRT ready. The PIC fakes a PS2 mouse which is detected by winxx (of course I could alter the ID so windoze won't recognise the device as a mouse but will ask for an .inf file and a driver). The wakeup thingy works great since BIOS resets the PS2 device if it shuts down, so the UIRT knows not to react on any other IR signal than the BOOT code). Does anybody out there have any experience with a VxD which catches the PS2 mouse packages? Or should we write a separate driver and create a virtual COM port?

Regards
Ruud

Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.. Could you be more specific?

Hi Ruud,

I can't help with the VxD situation since I don't code, but I have a question about the design anyhow. By getting current from the ps/2 port, is there enough current to drive the IR emitter if mounted externally to the PC via a small socket like the Xantech emitters? I'd like to make up the pc-boards for this and that is one of the 'features' I'd like to have. Thanks.

Hi Ruud,

I see why you were confused. I understand that the ps/2 ports were used to provide 'wakeup' functionality. I was mistaken. Anyhow, I'm wondering if it would be possible to run a cable from where the IR emitter is mounted on the pcb to a 'mini-plug' socket that is mounted on a card slot cover. I hope to seperate the IR emitter from the IR detector since I must use the "stick-on" type of IR emitter on my hi-fi gear. I'm concerned that there would not be enough current from the serial port to feed the emitter considering cable/connector loss. I hope this makes sense?

Anyhow, are there any schematics available for the "ps/2 - wake enabled" design?
Thanks for any information!

Hi Ruud,

I was looking at the feasibility of making a PS2 connected UIRT like device from scratch, when I stumbled into this link and this one here http://www.girder.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1367&highlight=ps2. It looks like substantial work was already done, but the project is rather dormant now. .

I have a few questions on the subject:

- How alive or dead is this project. Does it make sense to start in parallel, or will this only cause further confusion. (I am not making promises, I am juggling too much plates already, but I have some wishes that are not met by any other or the IR devices I found)

- Why Ruud, did you throw away the valueable PB4 to PB7 interupt-on-change lines. I see the lay-out is beautifully organised and simple to build, but having 3 input sources (IR, Data, Clock) does seem to call for connecting them to 3 interupt lines if they are availible anyway.

Greetings
Maurits

Maurits,

This is an old thread, the date is incorrect, don't be surprised if you don't get any reaction. :(

Yes, I was already thinking Oct 13 must have been a very busy day. Still, I figured chances are no worse than Ruud reacting to a new thread.

True, one can hope :-)
