In the late version I could not cut and paste in the action designer. Did you have this reported?

It is still present in this version. I can "cut" but not "paste".

Right you are, Dan. Right you are. This had not been reported, but I did find several inconsistencies in there, which I've now taken care of. Thanks!

Anyone actively using this version? Is it working well for you?

Things I've seen, and am fit to fix for a release tomorrow evening:

1) Deleting pages, page groups still show in jump and alias actions
2) Deleting buttons that have aliases against them cause problems when saving
3) Copying images/look doesn't change the mouse down image (for some reason)

I just finished creating a 480x640 interface mostly from scratch in the designer, and although it took some time to get perfect, it was an absolute -breeze- compared to Tonto.

Sorry Ben, not used this version yet.

Might just be my ccf.
But whenever I open it I get the error "Unable to read beyond end of stream"
I then have to open the CCF with Tonto, save the file & then I am able to open the file with Designer.
If I then save the file with designer & try open it again, I get the same error message & have to open with tonto again.
This has started happening with the last 2 versions of designer.

Des

This only happens when assigning a button alias

Can you send me the ccf after saving in Tonto (so all I have to do is open it and hit save)?

That would be great, thanks.

Hi Beags -
Thanks! This file helped me find a nasty little bug relating to key aliases. I've uploaded the fixed version.

Well Ben I am finally going to try the new designer out. I need to make some changes to Now Playing so it will be interesting to see if I can break it... hehehe

John

Ok that didn't take long....

How do you grab invisible buttons? On my light control panel I have a buttons that have no image (hence they are invisible) for 'on' and 'off that lay over the top of the integrated button/slider graphic that the user sees. In the new designer I can see the buttons listed on the tree and when I click the tree I can see the button highlighted but when I try and click on the button on the screen the dotted line disappears and I can't copy it or move it around.

What am I doing wrong?'

Also a couple requests....

First it would be nice when you copy and then paste an object (lets say you want to copy a button over and over again).... that when you click paste.. it would paste it at or at least near the current mouse position. Right now it pastes it in place making it difficult to know which one to grab to move.

Second it would be great to be able to use the Left Mouse Button/CTRL key to copy the object and be able to drag it to the new location. Labview has that feature and I use it hundreds of times per week. It really is a nice feature....

Last for now... some of my panels (frames) don't have names and show up as blanks on the tree.... is there a way to rename them? The 'Element Name' is ghosted out.

Well I tackled the change today and if went pretty well. I did have to redo all my invisible buttons for some reason (I could not grab them) but it really didn't take that long. Great job on the editor Ben!!!

Here is a link to the new screen shot.

Thanks John! As I recall, you had transparent images instead of transparent backgrounds (IE: no image, just text color and background color of transport) which was throwing off our checks on image alphas.

I wonder if we could convert these automatically, if you are still using them. If not, this probably won't happen too often. Thanks for going through this effort, John.

Regarding your requests:
1. We'll look at smarter location pasting
2. Hold control and left mouse button copies, you're saying? Tonto had something like this, and it always drove me crazy. Unless we're thinking of different things.
3. This is due to the current legacy issue that frames can have ID tag's (used for states) or names, but not both. We can have it say <unnamed> or something, for now. Once NRD 1.0 is "final" and we can start making changes to NR, we'll add the ability for a frame to have states _and_ a name.

jwilson56
November 9th, 2005, 06:05 AM
Well I am back at work today and checked Labview.... when you hold the CTRL key down and then click over an object with the left mouse button and drag the object, it will be copied and moved along with the mouse until you release the left mouse button. With this I can drag and click and quickly create a bunch of buttons. Very efficient once you get used to it. I have used other programs that had done simular things.

I would settle for a smarter paste function for now.

When I tried my CCF created with the new designer it seemed to whack out some other things (font colors changed and lost a frame for some reason). Nothing to drastic and nothing that was not quickly resolved. I agree that once the switch is made to the new designer most of these problems will never be seen again so there is no sense getting too excited about them.

I usually tackle major changes to Now Playing in the winter months... so I look forward to playing with the new designer and new features you will add down the road.

Dumb question.... when an error dialog pops up in the designer does is also write it out to a log file? I am getting the same error now (not quite repeatable) and then and would like to post the details.

I have to say I am really liking this new designer... and I never did have much trouble using Tonto either...but the new one is a breeze so far.

Great job again!!!!

Yes, you should find a logfile called "Designer.log" in the NRD directory.

Thanks John! As one of our best evangelists, I'm extremely happy to hear that you're finding it easy to use (and fun!). Please let us know of other things that you and the communities you represent would like to see, and we'll rapidly move to deliver.

Thanks again!

Ok... maybe I am missing it... how do you create a GAC view in the new designer? I have to admit that I always copied (I am a copy and paste junkie) and modified my GACs in Tonto but what are the steps you would use to create on in the designer from scratch?

John

John, did you look at the manual...? if we didn't cover it, let me know and I will ask John Hind to do a section on it.

jwilson56
November 22nd, 2005, 11:25 AM
Well I have not seen a manual for the designer. I did a search in this forum as well as looked in the designer folder. There is a help file and it doesn't cover GAC. If there is a manual could you provide me a link?

Thanks

John

Ben S

Mike means the help link. It does a have a bunch of information, but nothing on GAC specifically.

There's nothing specifically setup to create GAC+ views in your interface, but the following steps should get you up and running:

1. Decide on a GAC prefix name (this will be used when you fetch the GAC, and used on display elements and actions). This will be [Prefix] below.
2. Create a frame to house the GAC entries.
3. Create a frame inside that frame and make it the size you want each item in the GAC to be (a big rectangle for a list, a square for a set of album covers).
4. For the frame you created in step 2, open it and go to Position/Advanced. Set it's loop entries (#X, #Y, etc.) to be the way you'd like.
5. In the frame created in step 3, add elements for each GAC entry
5a. For an album cover, create a square button and set it's image variable to MP.[Prefix].Items[<LoopIndex>].Image
5b. For the GAC name, create a frame or button with the name {MP.[Prefix].Items[<LoopIndex>].Name}
5c. To have a button which will call the default action on an entry, use a lua (on release) action with the code [Prefix]:DefaultAction(<LoopIndex>)
5d. To have a button which will play the tracks on an entry, use a lua (on release) action with the code [Prefix]:Action(<LoopIndex>,'PLAY')
5e. To have a button which will add the tracks on an entry, use a lua (on release) action with the code [Prefix]:Action(<LoopIndex>,'ADD')
6. In your CCF's lua file, add:

[Prefix] = GAC:new{ var = '[Prefix'], count=#,useGP=1 };

# should be the total GAC entries you need.
7. In the jump action which goes to the page with the GAC entries, add a lua on release action with the code [Prefix]:GoScheme('<scheme>'), where scheme is where to get the entries from ('Playing Now' works, in addition to 'Media Library\Albums')

That should be it. This could (semi-easily) be automated in the designer at some point in the near future.

This document (http://www.promixis.com/download.php?ID=794) covers some more information about the GAC+ lua file.

Found a small quirk of a bug...

Open the properties of a button... change the name then decide to 'Cancel' out and the changes are still made....

Also I am not able to wrap text for long song titles.... is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong (WinXp client).

Another much needed enhancement (which Tonto had) is the ability to choose the text for the lables from a list as well as type them in. Its a bit ruff to select those custom Pronto characters from the keyboard. Maybe there is a way to do this but I have yet to figure out how.

Ben I found a small bug where you enter the X spacing for the Loop function. It seems that when you increment the X spacing using the mouse click (up and down) the number changes and everything works fine. However if you type the number into the box it ignores the entry (even though the number shows up in the box). This one drove me nuts for an hour!!!

Hi John - I'll fix both bugs right away. I think I use those "numeric up downs" elsewhere, and I think they all behave this way (with this bug).

As for the special font, agreed. I'll add a little on screen keyboard for that.

Thanks!

Ben also check your copy images.... I don't think its copying the other 'states'.... also it has trouble copying from one CCF to another... might be the buttons with no images assigned. I fixed them all in the the current Now Playing... but when I copied the light control panel frame over to another skin I am working on... it did the same thing... nothing worked....

Also we need a way to manage the graphics library.... for one thing I am getting duplicates like crazy when I did alot of copy and pasting... and with no way to know what button is using what graphic it was a pain to clean up... maybe a way to at least delete images from the library and assign the default image... and then you can go around re-assigning them to the correct ones... something...

I have spent quite a number of hours playing with the designer... and so far I am quite impressed... a few problems...but all in all... pretty solid... still waiting for a smarter paste function... lol

Now if only I could remember all that I learned in Photoshop last winter.... if you don't use it you lose it I guess... lol

John

P.S. Is the text wrap bug on your list to fix? My new skin needs it badly...

Agreed. I toyed with an algorithm to "figure out" when an image was copied, but had a problem or two so disabled it for now.

Yes, this should also be fixed in the prerelease of NR I sent you. Is it not working successfully?

Ben did you get my PM on the MJB List frame not being in the right spot relative to a hidden frame? Also I found that the MJB List will not slide with its parent frame using your new sliding LUA. Also I am getting lots of unhandled exception errors on many different actions dealing with frames/buttons and images and text changes. With some errors hitting the cancel button will get you past the error with the changes you did in tact. I didn't see anything in the log file.

John

P.S. Avid.... Any idea when your Avid Utilities will be updated?

Yes, I've found that bug as well (introduced as part of the animation stuff). I have a version here I'm just making tweaks in before releasing to the community "at large" for testing.

Regarding sliding - I'll make that work.

First bug...

You can't seem to rename frames. Under properties the new name appears to be changed but on the tree it remains the same.

After a few starts I can't start the designer without staring NR manually first. I use the latest NR version on the computer with designer. NR starts up, but it seems like Designer doesn't discover it. I only see the startup screen. Then, when I close NetRemote, the Designer pops the NetRemote could not be started box. OK'ing that shows that underneath the startup screen there's another box: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

OK'ing that shows that underneath the startup screen there's another box: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

It sounds like it's not registering COM properly (this is something Marcel mentioned he saw at one point). I'll need to investigate.

Thanks Mastiff.

HI folks -
FYI - In fixing the frame naming, I broke something else (clicking okay on element properties would remove child objects from the tree).

I'm fixing a few issues, and a new release will be available soon.

Thanks!

Hi Ben,

I tried the new version of Designer again, to see if it is finally able to import my old ccf.
Unfortunately the import of the standard skin is broken. So is the functionionality in the new 1.5.xx version of Netremote. :-(
I suppose this should still work?
In designer the templates are left blank. In NR 1.5.xx the skin images are shown, but the ccf part is placed at 0.0 position, so it overlaps the skin. 1.1 works correctly, but Designer still imports nothing.
Hope to hear from you soon
Cheers

The "standard" skin meaning the TSU6000 skin, or your custom skin?

Wilhelm

Ben,

what I meant was the skin in NRSkin directory (standard.ini) I think its TSU6000.
It's the same ccf I sent you several months ago.

Ben- Just tried that and got the same error. The plugin "instance" is (-5014) and the MarcelUtils Plugin is (-3014). So I'll now remove the dll, restart NR, and then try NRD...
OK, That did the trick! I can now start NRD w/o error!

Ben, this must be related to the MarcelUtil problem I documented in http://www.promixis.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14137 Why am I the only one with this problem? Can you point me to the registry keys to delete so I can attempt a fresh install? Or is there some debug you could suggest first?

Just upgraded to the new NR and NR Designer.

Does the "ShowFrame" doesn't work anymore?
Had in my LUA:
ShowFrameControls1 = FramePopup:New('ShowFrameControls1', '*', nil)

It worked fine in the older NR.

Now I get the error:
Error running LUA chunk

problem :

I have an always-on-top state frame that I want to animate, but the Element name is greyed out in designer, so how do I set the frame ID that I need for GetElementByName ?

local eltray = NetRemote.GetElementByName("????????");
if (eltray) then
local x,y = eltray:GetPosition();
local w,h = eltray:GetSize();
eltray:SetPosition(x+10,y);
end

edit :

a workaround for above problem is to put some button on top of the state frame and use

element:GetParent();

that works ok...

Marcel

Ben S
March 19th, 2006, 08:55 AM
Yes, that's a way to do it.

Alternatively you can use the "name" that NRD creates.

IE:

NetRemote.GetElementByName('STATE:myval') or whatever. This is actually the internal "name" of the frame.

mhwlng
March 19th, 2006, 09:23 AM
how do I find out the name that NRD creates ?

I have

State 1, rule NOWPLAYINGTRAYPOPUP is 1, hide when false checked

NetRemote.GetElementByName("STATE:NOWPLAYINGTRAYPOPUP");

I've a feeling that this might not be possible until we get the new CCF format. Colours are limited to a choice of 256 - in fact that might even be the websafe colours only so perhaps 216.

Another thing that would be nice is for the currently selected colour to be outlined in the colour selection dialog - then you could tell which one you'd tried.

Ben S
March 23rd, 2006, 05:25 AM
You currently must select one of the "Pronto" colors.

But the next version of NR and NRD will unlock a few features if NRD sees you are running NR 1.5.0.62 or newer, such as font selection, 24 bit color selection, and the naming of schemes and graphics to make organization easier.

Hi Ben-
Actually, after I installed NRD it wouldn't fire up and I got the error 'could not find mfc71.dll' (not word-for-word, but the error message was similar) - It seems that file is not installed with the package. I had to copy it manually to the NRD directory.

Ben,

I have noticed that if I place a button inside a frame (which you can toggle) on a template it does not work, however, if I place the same button directly on the template page(outside the frame) it does work.

If I place the frame on the main pages of the ccf, it works also.

Is this behaviour correct?

Ben S
March 27th, 2006, 04:44 PM
I'm confused. You mean the button won't toggle, or it doesn't appear?

danward79
March 28th, 2006, 12:58 AM
Hi Ben,

The button would not work.

I have done some more investigation, when I was chatting to Rob, it actually appears that for some reason, it is being blocked by another frame or objected on another page of the ccf.

Unfortunately I could not find the "other" object, but moving the frame around on the template proved it.

Placing the whole thing onto the template overlay solved the problem.

if I start nr first with a different ccf and then manually load my ccf file in designer, then I don't see any error and I can edit

sending my ccf file to nr from designer crashes nr and shortly after that designer as well..

but when I select bold/italic etc. this is not stored

* in designer, when I select verdana 20, I see verdana 19,8pt which gets rounded to verdana 19pt.
selecting 8 point verdana results in 7,8pt -> 7 pt

* if I enter a hex value in the colour chooser (thanks for that by the way :D ) and then press ok, it is not used.
I need to change the focus to another edit box before pressing ok.

* in the playing now list, the selected colour can be entered in the

* The netremote variable inspector gets confused if long strings are visible (e.g. artist biography, album review, lyrics)

Ben,

I have just noticed that the variable inspectors both NR and lua have the same window title.

kurtlewis
April 12th, 2006, 06:32 PM
Im noticing in NRD, when I go to set a background frame or button color that was previously saved as transparent, setting the color now forces the entire page background to pick up the same setting. I'm seeing this issue with changing font colors as well.

Example- I have a transparent button frame in my album view that if you press it executes opening the child. I wanted to set this button frame to a color 'on press'. Setting it to non-transparent and choosing a color makes the entire page that color. I am forced to leave it as transparent.
Same for the loop index. I wanted to set a background color for it, doing so changes the page color as well. My page backgrounds are all transparent and use the cooresponding template for it's image.

Ben S
April 12th, 2006, 06:34 PM
Instead of just setting the color, right click in the scheme area and choose "add scheme", set it to that scheme, and then change the color.

It's trying to change all elements using that scheme (to be helpful).

Thanks Dan - it's fixed.

Ben S
April 12th, 2006, 09:41 PM
Oh. Hmmm. That should work. I'll need to investigate. I'm making some other decent sized changes to NRD to support more extension of the format (separate areas in the format for states, loops, hidden states, etc. so there is less "guessing" about what things can and can't work together). I'll double check this, also, and release both the new NR and NRD tomorrow evening.

kewl- Looking forward to it!

on another note, shouldn't I be able to use any font now with the 1.1? I'm still stuck with only choosing from Pronto. I'm assuming that if working correctly I would see all of the font choices in the object properties / display tab, under 'change font'?

Ben S
April 12th, 2006, 09:46 PM
Are you sure you changed the file format to NRD 1.1 via System properties? Once you do that you can choose 24 bit colors, name schemes, and choose fonts. It sounds like it might not have "taken".

kurtlewis
April 12th, 2006, 09:58 PM
you were right- I had set it to 1.1 yesterday after reading a thread on it. I just looked at the system proerties and it was back at 1.0!
I set it to 1.1, saved, closed, opened and it seems to have taken.

I'm still seeing the odd color choices, and if you look at the screenshot the outer color band for the scheme is not rendering in the preview. I can at least name them now, so that's good. but any I create, the outer color still does not show in the right-hand scheme preview.

I got my fonts (hooray)- I noticed that selecting 'bold' does not work though- It doesn't take. Try it out with a Verdana font.

Where do I find the 24-bit color selection?

kurtlewis
April 12th, 2006, 10:03 PM
you know what- i might be thinking that there is supposed to be an outer color band on each scheme selection, because I saw it laid out like that in earler versions of NRD. So there may not be anything to it....

Hi Ben- Hate to say it, but Animated gifs still do not work, it's the same issue as posted before-

Did clean install of new NRD, running 1.1 ccf format, NR v66

Putting the animated gif into the ccf works as expected, gives the prompt to use animation, then shows it in it's animated working state in the properites window.
Running it in NR shows a static image.
Opening up the saved ccf back in NRD shows the animation getting saved out as a ablock image of vertically stacked slides.

-i've attached the gif I'm trying out

kurtlewis
May 1st, 2006, 02:51 AM
well I found this really interesting...
I took my ccf and opened it back up in NRD. Checked the format, it showed 1.1. Then I looked at the animated gif I had specified to use in my NP list. It showed as having been 'converted' to a single static image comprised of slides- as expected, per my previous posts.

I saved the ccf with a different name, changed it back to 1.0 format. saved it, then saved it again to 1.1 format.
I deleted the gif and re-added it. Then I saved it and closed the ccf. I re-opened the ccf and amazingly the gif still animated in NRD. It should have been 'converted' to static like before but now it seemed like it was working.
so i opened up this one in NR. And now for the kicker... the NP list would not show any contents!

I opened up my original ccf in NR and the NP list showed up fine, with the static gif.
I think converting the ccf back to 1.0, then forward again to 1.1 farked up something. either that, or doing this now made the 1.1 format save correctly in NRD, and NR does not like the gif animation.

I am going to email you both of my ccf's to check out.
-version 1.8 is in 1.1 format and the animated gif has somehow been
made 'static', and the NP list shows up in NR.
-version 1.9 is a copy of 1.8 in 1.1, then I converted it to 1.0, then to 1.1.
This caused the NP list to not show anymore in NR for this ccf... but
opening 1.9 back up in NRD shows that it is now saving the gif animation
correctly.

I think you will have to look at these to really understand what I'm talking about...
