I have a similar question like OE1K, is there an updated PCB design for the UIRT with 'Power ON' functionality ?

Wykat

ps: I would like to use 5V from the WOL connector  .

I'd like to know as well. Infact, I'd love to see a schematic that I'd convert into a file for http://www.expresspcb.com . I've had them make many pcb (small runs) and the quality is good. If we had something like that, it'd be easy for anyone to have their own boards made easily whenever anyone needed them. And if the layout were small enough, you could get approx 10 boards made from one $60.00 order that takes 3 days to make.
Anyone else interested in this?

Personally, as soon as I see a PCB layout I'll go etch ~30 at the EE lab on campus for free (like I did for my batch of UIRT 1.0 kits).

After reading all the topics on the UIRT (took me several hours) I now understand what the problem is:
The firmware for the PIC is ready but there's no schematic or PCB layout wich uses all it's features.

I made a preliminary schematic and PCB layout, features are:
- Takes 5V supply from the PC: more power.
- Has onboard emitters and the possibility for external led's through jack's.
- Has the 4 outputs (RA0, RA1, RB1 and RB2) buffered through open-collector darlingtons.
These can be used for PC power control and ....
- Has a buffered input to RB0, but am not sure if this is already implemented in JON's firmware.
- In circuit programming might work, needs testing.
- It also has pin headers for unused RA2, RA3 and RA4 I/O pins, for future use?

The PCB has a DB9 connector for the COMM port, is single sided and measures approx. 8 x 4 cm.

I ordered all the parts required to build some prototypes and hope to have some results next week.

Personally I do not need an UIRT like this but would like to contribute to the "Girder-community".

Suggestions, comments?

Comments: Thanks! I hope it works great! Sounds like you covered all the features (and I've been reading the discussion all along).

Once you get it tested, I'll be happy to etch a batch of PCB's and help coordinate getting some kits together.

Given the UIRT does not use an IR receiver module to detect the carrier (typ. 38 KHz), and to the signal processing which a PIC cannot do, I wonder how well this thing can work in environments like sun-lit rooms, florescent lights and so on? The $4 receiver/demod modules have a bandpass filter to reject mains noise, etc.

Seems somewhat popular in its receive-only form, so perhaps it does work ok.

Actually the UIRT does have a receiver module. If you look ar Ruud van Gessel's original design http://people.a2000.nl/rwvgesse/FixFrame.htm?projects.htm, the thing that connects to J2 is a receiver module. It is not clearly explained on the UIRT page, but it refers to the UIR page (on which the UIRT is based) and there you will find descriptions of the receiver module and suggested part numbers.

Yes - I am mistaken!

Anyone know where to purchase the PCBs in kit or assembled form.

Oe1k-

Just curious if you've had a chance to look at Luc's designs for the PCB?
I'd like to get the bracker version. You mentioned that you'd be willing to assist in assembling kits. Is this still possible? I'd like to help as well, perhaps acquire the parts necessary and host a website for assembly. Do you still want to make this thing fly?

PGPfan@work:
Well, here's a copy of the email I just sent to everyone that I had email addresses for, who all asked about kits since the first batch ran out:
That's right folks, the UIRT 2.0 is pretty-much finished. Unfortunately, I won't be able to put kits together (I'm graduating and moving to another University, so I won't have time to coordinate parts and etching PCB's.) Any of you who are still interested in getting a kit, please see the girder forum at http://www.girder.nl/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=7 and hopefully someone else will step forward to coordinate the kits.

Good luck!

I'll be too busy with finals and moving for the next month or so; hopefully you all will have kits out and running by then. If not, I'll be back and see what I can help with.
