Can IrDA module be used as receiver

Excuse me if this is an old question but...i would appreciate it if anyone could advise whether an IrDA module attached direct to the motherboard header can be used as a remote control receiver instead of using a serial based item?

I have an ATX Infra Red Module (Manufacturer code: ASUS-IRDA) attached to an ABIT SE6 running W2kP.
