That might be possible yes, in my examples I always call stop_device from clean_up_device just to be sure everything stopped okay. So I problably never saw this one.
Was this the reason for the problem with the serial plugin ?

No, this didn't cause the problem. My stupidity caused the problem. :smile: This stopped one of my "clever" solutions, though. :wink:
I just thought the call to stop_device would make the interface more symetrical.

This has probably been going on forever. :smile: There is probably a really good reason for it. :smile:
I'm not seeing a call to stop_device before the call to clean_up_device for devices that have received a start_device call.
I'm using the latest Girder 3.1.1.
