Here's an answer: use a free domain name with auto-update. I use no-ip.com's free service.
See http://www.no-ip.com/downloads.php for the client that you run on the other machine. How this works:

1. You set up a free domain name, such as wifessister.no-ip.com (or any of the ~20 base domains they have, such as .hopto.org) that points to the current IP of her computer.
2. Install the client on her computer:"When configured correctly, the client will check your IP address at a given time interval checking to see if your IP has changed. If your IP address has changed it will notify our dns servers and update the IP corresponding to your No-IP/No-IP+ hostname."

Note: there are many other free domain-name systems that can do this, but I've used no-ip.com for about a year and love it (no adds, no spam, etc.)

BTW, what are you controlling on her computer, anyway? Just wondering.

Ahh, I see the use now.
If your home connection was fast enough, I would suggest using WinVNC ( http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ ) to just take control of the computer and view the screen and everything. This is what I use to access my home computer from school, since it is free and can connect from any web browser. But, this may not be what you want, since it is practically useless if either computer has a slow connection.

Hi!
I'm going to install Girder on a computer that's in my wife's sister's house and send commands to it (long story, but she's got ADSL while we can't get it), but to be able to send those commands via the Internet I need to know that ADSL computer's IP address at all times, right? So what I would like is a way to get Girder (or any other program) to check the IP address every time the computer logs on the ADSL (or perhaps every other hour or so) and email that address to my mail address, so I know where to send the TCP/IP commands. Is this possible? I hope some of you wizards out there can help me! :D

Thank you! I will check this out tomorrow! I'll use it to control turning on and off of the Kazaa and Audiogalaxy accounts and to reboot if I see a problem. :-)

Yes, my ISDN is too slow for that kind of control. But the no-ip.com works just as I need it to! Thanks again! :-)
