.NET is Microsofts Application Programming Interfaces (API) that lets Windows programmers "easily" build applications that take advantage of a networked environment. :D
It provides routines that do all kinds of stuff that is supposed to be important in that environment. I haven't used .NET nor studied the API in depth so I have no direct experience from which to draw.
From my perspective, though, the little I've read seems to imply yet more Visual Basic-ish bloatware that locks you into Microsoft solutions. Every .NET application I've read about has required things like IIS, NT/XP server and other crap that is done better and cheaper with open solutions. Oh well, what do I know.
The best technical solution doesn't always win. :(
