Start an app. on noticing that another app. is running

I am trying to automatically start a joystick calibration program when specific games have been executed and keep it in the foreground. I have tried the Girder (is foreground and Window exists) functions to condition the joystick program, but I cannot get them to work for this. :( Any ideas? :-?
