have a look at http://www.girder.nl/help/faq.php#202 .... in most cases IRDA won't work reliably... as you already know ;-(

pgordon,
the problem is not to find the correct settings for the serial port, but having unmatched modulation and wavelength on IR-transmitter (in your remote control) and the IRDA-receiver. One more problem is that IRDA receivers only operate within a very small angle.
So, if it works, be happy and smile, if not, ok, thats what most of us who tried it found out.... don't put too much work in it.

I have one these MA600 IRDA to RS232 adapters lying around...
http://matweb-01.com/English/eng-products-ma600.htm#compatible
Is there any way I can use this an an IR receiver for Girder?
I did a little bit of "playing" with it, using the generic serial plugin, and was intermittently able to learn commands with it, - but looking at the incoming data stream in hyperterminal it looked as though the same button press on the remote was not always producing a consistent stream. - but then I was guessing wildly at the serial port settings....
As I don't use it for much else now, it would be nice to use it with Girder...
Any thoughts anyone?
Cheers.

Yeah, I saw that (I did read the FAQ first!!) - I just wondered if because I can see data arriving at the serial port when I point a remote at it, whether I could use it as a receiver for "normal" IR rather than IRDA...
using the generic serial plugin, it "sort of" worked in principle, but the input stream was not consistent....
Sometimes presses of a single remote key would result in different data bursts seen at the COM port...
Sometimes presses of different keys on the remote would result in the same datastream being seen as other buttons...
But, I have *no idea* what the correct serial port settings are for the device....
Hmm.... Oh well...

As the ntl (ex cable and wireless only - ondemand channel = 0) and Telewest digital cable boxes utilise the IRDA standard, i'm wondering if it would be possible to use one of those remote controls with your device.
Just a thought. :D
