Seconds skipping in Zoom + Zoom skipping from NR

I have tried on several computers and PPC's, and even with NR on the same computer as Zoom, but it only counts the seconds correctly for maybe 10 seconds or so after the start. Then it stops for a few seconds, for instance on 6, and go directly to 10 to catch up. Has anybody got that moving smoothly?

Also when I'm on the Zoom page that has the slider and seconds with my PPC it makes the movie jerky for a few seconds perhaps every 20 minutes or so. I have eliminated all other possible reasons. Is this to be expected, or is there something funky going on?

It's not the Zoom Player computer CPU load, it doesn't go above 92-93 % (P4 3.2 @ 3.75 with FFDShow).

Neither of these should happen. Unless you are pressing buttons and running Zoom plug-in actions, NR is simply passively receiving and displaying data from Zoom Player. Can I suggest a couple of experiments:

On a PC running NR, download and run DebugView from http://www.sysinternals.com/MiscellaneousUtilities.html. Then, in the Zoom plug-in properties, select Logging. The plug-in should then log its communication with Zoom Player. Is this jerky or intermittent?

Without NR running start Zoom Player. Then on a PC (possibly the same one), run a CMD box and execute "telnet <computername> 4769". The <computername> can be "localost" if you are running telnet on the same computer as Zoom. In this case, do you get the same occasional jerkiness?

You can see that it starts fluid but then begins to skip after around 12 seconds (the movie started on 3 seconds).

Edit: But telnetting in just to check if that works I see the same uneven movement of seconds as with NetRemote.

It's not VERY jerky - it occasionally skips a second, but I can't see any more than that.

This is because Zoom sends a change (e.g. "<-- 1100 08:06 / 1:57:21") every time the timeline changes, but sometime skips one. Receipt of this message is what is used to trigger the change to ZP.Position. The fact that you get the same effect through telnet suggests that Zoom Player can't quite keep up at 90%+ CPU and determines that the position information is less important than glitches on the video and so drops one.

Wow!! I have no explanation for this at all. I would be very interested to see of this happens with telnet. There is no "clever" buffering of the messages from Zoom before they are logged. And, as it uses TCP (not UDP), the networking stack should guarantee that they are received in the same order as they are sent. So I wonder if it is a Zoom bug adding spurious buffering. If you can see that with telnet, it would need a post on the Zoom forum.

I did see the same skipping of seconds yesterday when I tried the preview with NetRemote, so I would assume it's there as well.

I did some heavy experimenting today (well, I watched "Blade 2" with my wife, and the stuff started skipping...). Turns out that it isn't the Zoom Driver that's creating the problem. It seems to be MediaBridge or Media Center. So this was a red herring, except for the seconds out of order...

Good to have narrowed down half of it. And on the Zoom forum, to explain the out-of-order timeline, Blight makes a convincing case that there are "glitches" in the media files.

No media files, only pure DVD's. But there may be glitches in them too, I guess...

I put in a message at the Zoom board. But the next question is what the later versions of MediaBridge does every 15-20 minutes that earlier versions didn't do. Because I didn't have that problem until I upgraded MB (togetther with the rest of the NR system at the same time as I started using the old PPC for Zoom control, which is why I thought this was the culprit. I guess maybe 3-4 versions ago. Any ideas?
