View Full Version : What's the difference between an IR and RF remote?

It is a matter of someone writing a plugin for the hardware.

How does the ATI RF receiver attach to the PC? USB? serial? Direct to the AIW card?

If serially attached, one of the already written plugins may work.

I haven't found any documentation on the driver on the ATI site. Without some form of document, this would seem VERY difficult to support.

If you'd like aplugin, send an E-Mail to ATI and tell them to publish documentation to allow third party applications to take advantage of this (currently) proprietary remote control.

I know what the difference is at the signal level, but why does Girder seem to support IR remotes but not RF remotes?

I have an ATI RF remote that I got with my Radeon AIW card. I don't want to use an IR receiver because of the line-of-sight limitations. Am I just out of luck when it comes to using Girder, or is it just a matter of someone writing a driver?

Thanks,

Kevin

The ATI receiver connects via USB. The whole unit is actually an OEM X10 device made exculsively for ATI, and is also sold seperately from the video card.

Is there any hope?

Thanks!

I use irman, and as long as i'm in the same room it works fine.
Mines attached to the wall with a blob of blu-tac (behing my seating position) and picks up signals from everyware in the room (without pointing the remote at it), if you just want same room use, it could be worth a try if you don't get a positive answer on the RF Situation.

The information about the ATI remote control can be found at http://www.ati.com/products/pc/remotewonder/.

I am planning to buy this one in a matter of days so I too would be glad if someone would be able to write a plugin for this device.
