View Full Version : What would you think if you were behind this car?

I have put a 19" LCD monitor in the rear window of my car (had a spare one when I fired it from it's job as the kitchen TV and put in a widescreen instead, and by chance it had an external power supply that fed it 12 V, which my car does very well), connected to my carputer and controlled by NetRemote (with some girder parts, like starting it in the right place and a timer that jumps between three default images and go back to them after 20 second when something else is shown. This is the rear NetRemote instance with the first of these default images. It says (in Norwegian): "You're driving behind Mastiff's MediaSUV".

Then there's the "playing now", basically it says "We're listening to this album now". Like I always do, I'm using the black metal classic from Mercyful Fate as a demonstration record.

And what "made by Mastiff" original would be complete without a nice, little picture of Hobbit?

Then there are the messages, and I have them for all occasions. Especially nice when somebody's tailgating me. This is made with Avid's scrolling text, and scrolles upwards. It says "please don't drive so close, I'm shy". A bit blurry because of the long shutter time. Anyway, if this isn't enough, I have stronger versions, like "if you don't break now, I'm gonna break hard!" But so far I have had positive reactions from at least 80 % of the cars, they increase the distance. The rest are probably short sightede and drive close to read it!

If that doesn't help, or if I have just passed somebody who's been doing below speed limit for a long time and I'm annoyed, I use a CCF page that jumps between these three. I can show movies with Zoom Player on the rear monitor as well, but I'm afraid the cops may dislike that...

Hilarious! There's a "case study" in here, I know there is. :)

I told my wife I'd be called crazy within a few hours from posting this... ;) And I have more in store, but that will have to wait.

Very cool. Unfortunately, here in Los Angeles, driving around with a big prominent lcd display is a sure way to get the attention of thieves.

Yeah, here the moose are the big problem... :)

Edit: We actually had a few problems with tools and stuff disappearing a few years ago, but when we beat the shit out of the neighbour's 15 year old, it stopped... Catching them red handed with witnesses has the fortunate side effect that the parents won't object to a bit of a beating. No lasting damage, but he was pretty sore for a few days. His father actually passed by when it happened and the kid shouted help. But the father shouted back: "If Mastiff's giving it to you, I'm pretty sure you deserve it. Take it like a man!"

Actually I was more thinking about "Policemen are doing a very important job for society" or another blatant a$$ kissing! And yes, you should see the moose jacking sports cars. But the biggest problem is the badger motorcycle thieves. ;)

LOL... love it.

Over here we don't have badger motorbike thieves... we have teen UN-badger thieves - they collect the badges off cars. There have been quite a number of car owners come out to their car in the mornings to find that all their badges have been removed in the night. Now if we could come up with a girder/carputer that detected this and screamed "BADGE THIEVES... HELP!" when they detected this it would be really cool... or really darn scary lol.

I wonder if SKYNET was actually Girder2010?

Skynet is actually the current Girder 5 DoD version, which is very secret, so Ron told me to tell nobody about it. So don't tell anybody I told you! ;)

And I have a very nice idea about an alarm. But first I gotta find out how I can get 5000 Volts from a car battery... :D

Don't you remember the mock ads in Robocop... where this thief gets into the car and starts it and it fries him.

Don't tell me - you work for OCP Security Division ;)

I was actually thinking about that one when I wrote that! Nice to have a common cultural background! :D

When I was scouring the net for Nokia 3310 F-Bus info for SMS interfacing with Girder and I came across something you may like..

http://www.embedtronics.com/nokia/fbus.html

Scroll down and find "The SMS car tracking system". Using an old 3310 and a gps unit to get it to sms you if it's stolen and find where it actually is. Awesome modding idea - especially with your setup.

I can imagine it now...

"HEY BOSS... I'M GETTING NICKED AND I'M DOWN THE PUB AT THE MOMENT. SAVE ME PLEEEEEASE!"

Very cool! But it doesn't seem like it was ever finished. Anyway, I have a GSM alarm in my car now, and I can immobilize the car from my phone. So I can't see where it is, but they can't move it either. Oh, and I can monitor the car and hear what they're saying.

Oh man that is sooooo damn cool... now all you need is to get some bulletproof glass and a central locking override... clickety click... captured crooks in one (expensive) lesson. Perhaps you could even get some nitrous oxide controlled to the mobile phone too but that would be awful if you were driving and it went off by accident (leading to an accident I would guess heh).

The hearing what they are saying would be very useful if you record it as it would be extra evidence wouldn't it. That's got to be one really expensive SUV so I don't blame you for you protecting it.

I thought I was a gadget freak but you really beat me hands down... I'm jealous damnit! :D

Actually it's only a '95 Chevy Suburban, but they are rather expensive over here! And I have built and installed everything myself, alarm, audio system, everything. Oh, and thanks, I love it when other gadget freaks are jealous! ;)
