View Full Version : Whats the best way to update?
Doomer!

Hello,
I thought an answer was forth coming as I asked this question two different places. Upon rechecking: at least one post was removed!
My bad...?
I want to keep up with the current and future releases of G5.
I am an Insteon supporter...
A large time investment was made naming all the Insteon devices herein. I've now had to do it twice...
I fear losing that work again, and don't know how to make a backup of the file(s) wherein this data is stored.
And I'm a few revisions back - possibly the reaon it isn't quite working, so I'm anxious to update.
I didn't even know more versions had come out!!
So...
Do I just install the new atop the old?
Should I delete stuff first??
Any suggestions that preserve the Insteon naming would be apreciated.
Thanks, in advance.
Jack

Jack,
I hope no posts were deleted - we generally do not moderate our forum unless something is offensive or off topic. We leave any comments or criticisms as is.
RE: Updating. G5 is still evolving and files may change so we mostly recommend an uninstall and reinstall. We will definitely post a warning when you MUST uninstall and reinstall.
You config info is NOT stored in the G5 directory. It is stored under either the User or General Application Directory folder. To get to it easily, open the settings dialog, goto to file logging. Click the Explore button. Explorer opens up. You will see the G5 log files. Go up a dir and then to the Config dir. Your config files are there. You can back them up as needed.
Thanks for your comments.

About the removed post: You had posted a dupe. Hence one of them was deleted. I did answer your original request too.

Okay...
So I have made a backup of my config directory, just in case. ;-)
Next I uninstalled G5...
I downloaded and installed G5 v516...
I obtained a FIX-KEY to repair a compromized license. (FYI: 8 days remaining on my Insteon plugin's trial...)
During the installation, SmartHome's installer got involved and I was uncertain what to do - so I probably did the wrong thing. Dohh!!
(how would one backup THIS Insteon configuration data?)
So I did the Un-install, expecting it to follow with a fresh install. No such luck; so I did the whole install again!
I also re-booted the PC in question.
I have located the Insteon device manager within Girder, but none of my devices ('cept the USB-PLC) appear.
Uh oh!
I looked at the confir directory, and all seems well - but I have not touched any files therein.
Do I in fact need to restore my backup?
Please advise!!

Well things are looking up...
The G5 v516 update is now working better than ever, Insteonly speaking!
I backed-up the G5 config directory before updating. I feared losing the work it took to assign names to all the Insteon devices...
And my fears were realized!
Yep... G5 has now discovered most or all the Insteon devices again...
Thats the good news.
The bad news is all the names and location information didn't fill back in...
So...
What now?
Which file should be restored???
Thanks...
Jack

Jack, I never have to restore or save the cfg dir between G installs. You shouldn't need to. Make sure that you are selecting the same preferences when installing.
When you are talking about missing devices... do you mean in the Insteon pages or on the Device Manager pages?

Jack, would you also attach a screen shot of the missing info?

Make sure that you are selecting the same preferences when installing.
There are not many choices when installing.
I unchecked the G4 Registry option...
Perhaps that was a mistake?

That which is missing, is absent from the pictures.
Naturally!
Loc\Name:
In my case there used to be information...
At least 32 devices worth!
Help me get that work back, please?

Mike is out of town. He'll be back next week.
When Mike returns, will he automatically pick up where we left off?
I am still awaiting help & answers...
Another issue: My trial period for the Insteon plug-in has elapsed while waiting for Mike's return. Dohh!
Jens has a new version of his Flatstyle skin for NetRemote2 that we hoped would support the lighting using Insteon. I am unable to provide feedback for him, either. No lighting shows up while the plug-in isn't working.
So to whom it may concern - I'm still waitin...
Thanks, in advance.
Sincerely,
Jack
