Taskcreate plugin - better detection?

I do not know of any beside polling :-( Maybe hooking deep into the OS, but I'm a little reluctant to do that. Curious to hear some suggestions though.

Is there any way of improving the taskcreate plugin so it detects applications that load into the system tray rather than using a taskbar icon?
Two of my apps (radiator - radio; and winamp) have the option of system tray only and I prefer it this way since the taskbar is not cluttered with unnecessary buttons.
There are a number of things which I do on start/stop including muting, enabling/disabling groups etc. which get out of sync if the application is not detected as starting/stopping.
