I have a simple question regarding how girder works. I currently have girder setup using the McIR plugin although i have ordered a USB-UIRT. My question is in girder you can create countless actions/triggers etc to do/control almost anything but how do you go about setting up the remote to trigger those actions.

I first used my MCE remote by assigning different buttons to perform custom actions but quickly ran out of buttons on the MCE Remote. I recently purchased an URC MX-980 universal remote with RF which has a programmable lcd so it is pretty flexible.

My question then is how do you go about creating ir codes (or to be more precise i should say RF codes which will then be transmitted by ir to the USB-UIRT) to trigger custom actions in girder that obv dont exist on the original remote like open "VLC Player", control Insteon Lighting, etc? Do you simply start with a remote for a device that has a ton of codes you can assign or is there a way to make the remote generate code x and use that in girder to trigger action y. Or maybe have girder tell the remote to use code x for action y

thx

newave,

Take a look at this Girder 4 forum listing. Hopefully this will give you an idea of how to use your remote with Girder to trigger actions.

Vitello thanks for the response although after reading the thread i dont think it answers my question.

I am trying to figure out how you configure a universal remote to trigger actions in girder when there is no existing ir code for that action on the original remote.

For example if i want to control my Insteon lighting or tell my pc to start VLC player whats the best way to go about doing that. Do i have to configure my remote to act like some random remote, configure girder to work with that same remote and then override those ir codes to perform the actions i want in girder?

Surely there is an easier/more efficient way to do it? Especially seeing as i am then limited to the number of ir codes of that random remote.

thx again

Newave,

Sorry for not being more specific. I actually have done exactly what you are thinking of doing. I have a MX-700 remote, which is an older version of the MX-980. What I did to control my Insteon lights is to download ir codes for a device that I didn't have and didn't ever plan on getting. I picked an old DVD player because there were more than enough ir codes to reuse. I then relabled the buttons and used references to the relabled buttons where I wanted to put Insteon lighting commands. You don't need to configure your MX-980 as a random remote, you only need to add a random device in addition you your real devices.

This worked well for me. I am now using NetRemote with a wi-fi ppc in place of my MX-700 to send commands to Girder because the MX-700 is ir only and I wanted Insteon control from anywhere in my house. Your MX-980 can be used with RF to a base unit which sends the ir, so you have more flexibility.

Additionally, Smarthome is about to ship an IRLinc device with does direct ir to Insteon commands. If you got one of these devices then in place of a random device, you would use whatever ir commands the IRLinc used.

Hope this help.

Thanks for the quick response. Its unfortunate that there is no other way to achieve this as it still feels like a bit of a hack. Perhaps i wil look into the mx980 software to see if there is anyway to just to tell the remote to send certain ir codes.
