Newbie Questions

Hello all, I am new to the home automation realm, but I am very competent with computers, networking, and a little coding. I am wondering what programs I need to purchase for my set up.

These are my components I have:
PC with Windows Media Center
USB-Uirt
DirecTV reciever
Sony A/V Reciever
Projector
Nokia N800 Internet Tablet

Items I wish to add:
Insteon USB Lighting Controller

My plan is to have my N800 (using remote desktop) send controls over wifi to the PC running Girder to send IR Signals to my various components and to be able to control Media Center.

I would like a nice UI on the N800 to control all of this, with buttons that do multiple controls. Like a "Watch TV" button that will turn on the projector, A/v Reciever, DirecTV, etc and then have controls for channels and volume.

I am assuming I need both Netremote and Girder to pull this off. Am I correct?

Yes, you've got it right - Girder for the control and NetRemote for the UI

I'm not 100% clear what OS the Nokia runs - but I'm not convinced that NR will run on it at all. It might be a Linux variant.

You can probably use Girder's webserver to talk to it however.

Or if you're using remote desktop software then you could run NR on the same PC as Girder I guess.

It is linux based.

I was thinking running Netremote on another windows machine on my network and using remote desktop on the n800 to access the ui.

I am guessing the girder web server doesn't have the pretty interface like NR. I have to make it easy for the misses, if possible. (grin)

Have you got the Nokia running RD and controlling NR? How well does it work for you?
