Remote for Media Room

Hello I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I am purchasing a tablet PC to control security cameras at my house. I figured while I have to buy a PC for this I would then use it for my media room for control of my equipment. I was pointed in the dir of Girder. My question is how hard is it to use to get IR commands into the program do I have to use all discrete codes or can I make my pages like you would on a pronto and then learn each through IR commands via each remote if I don't have decrete codes for a certain component. Also any other direction where I can go and read to learn.
