Hi All,

may you help me on installing netremote on 3400 fujitsu with windows 98?

Thanks, and happy new year.

Although the installation process goes fine, I have not been able to get any version of NetRemote 2 to run on any of my legacy Win98SE machines that I have tried. All versions of MediaBridge do run fine on these machines and the original NeRemote runs fine. For earlier versions of the Suite like 2.0.0.86 I get a runtime error when NetRemote 2 (NETREMOTE.EXE) tries to start. For recent versions of the Suite like 2.0.15.138 I get the message that NETREMOTE.EXE cannot run because it is in an invalid format. .NET Framework 2.0 is installed, but some of the processors on these legacy machines are Pentium P2 and do not have much memory. All versions of NetRemote 2 run fine on the Win2K Professional and XP Professional machines that I have tried. Although it is my understanding that NetRemote 2 should run under Win98SE, I cannot find a list of system requirements for it. What does NetRemote 2 require?

Not sure why it's saying the .exe is in an invalid format - it's been a while since I ran anything other than an NT derived OS here.

When do you see this message? Can you take a screenshot?

NR version 1.0.44 or so was the last version that worked on Win98. I've had to upgarde my Fujitsu tablets to Win2k to run version 2.0 of NR.

Ron,

Attached are the screen shots. There are two pages. It might be moot based on dsmes response, but it would be nice if I could use NetRemote 2 on my legacy Win98SE machines. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Rob, may you insert a link for the download?

I can't, but Ron probably can.

One possibility that I've discoved while researching this issue is that Win95 & 98 don't like resource IDs > 32767 - NR certainly seems to use those. I may be able to fix this issue in a later build if that is the cause of this problem.

Honestly,.. Windows 98 is over 10 years old now, there might be functions calls in NetRemote that rely on Windows 2000 and up. This is what might be causing your issue. Contact sales@promixis.com for the older links.

Ron,

I can understand no longer wanting to support 98 or ME. I see it as a manpower and an economic issue. If that is the case then you might want to update the Platform & Device Support where it states that 98 and ME are supported for NetRemote (maybe this is meant only for the original NetRemote) to clarify the issue. It would be nice to know if any version of NetRemote 2 ran on 98 or ME. I have not found a version that ran on any of my legacy 98 or ME machines. The initial impetus for my upgrading to NetRemote 2 is that it supports the file tree structure in MediaBridge where I do not think any version of the original NetRemote does that. I still have legacy Win98SE machines because I am using MIDI boards that were never upgraded beyond Win98SE. They work fine for my purposes. I do not know whether the people handling "Sales" can answer the question of whether any version of NetRemote 2 worked with 98 or ME and which versions worked with which operating systems. I would have thought that this would be a "Support" issue to be handled here. Just point me in the right direction and I will take it from there.

Thanks,

Joe

The sales reference was to get the older downloads.

Download dependency walker and check if NetRemote uses any function calls that are not available on Windows 98. I do not have access to a Windows 98 install anymore. Report back with your results.

It may be worth waiting for the next build of NR though - which has had (I hope) all resource IDs >32767 changed. I've not been able to find my Win98 install disk so I can't check whether it functions here, but I'm moderately hopeful that it will.

Ron,

Attached are the results on a ME machine for NetRemote 2.0.0.86. For the current version 2.0.15.138 I get the message that NETREMOTE.EXE cannot run because it is in an invalid format (see post #5). The attachment has two pages to show the complete warning. I do not think that APPHELP.DLL or USERENV.DLL are used in 98 or ME.

Thanks,

Joe

Try this build:

http://promixis.s3.amazonaws.com/NetRemote-Suite-2.0.17.140.exe

Try this build:

Don't work. :-(

Damn, I may have missed a resource ID somewhere. Of course there may be another cause. If I find my Win98 CD I'll create a VM to try it myself.

I take it you get the same message?

It may be worth trying without any plugins as well - just rename the plugins folder.

Ron and Rob,

On a Windows ME machine build 2.0.17.140 overcomes the invalid format problem. Now it gets a runtime error like build 2.0.0.86. I ran Dependency Walker on build 2.0.17.140 and like build 2.0.0.86 there are warnings about APPHELP.DLL and USERENV.DLL. I believe that APPHELP.DLL is for IE and Windows XP. APPHELP.DLL is not on a Win2K machine for which NetRemote 2 works. So, that might not be a problem. USERENV.DLL is on that Win2K machine. So that might be worth looking into. As far as I know there is not a version of USERENV.DLL for Windows 98 or ME. I get the same results with or without the Plugins. Your assistance is appreciated.

Good we are getting somewhere now!

Checking here I can't find the dependency for userenv.dll or apphelp.dll can you try and find those dlls in the treeview of Dependency walker and tell me how they are nested?

For example MSVCR71.dll is nested in MFC71U.DLL

Ron,

Both APPHELP.DLL and USERENV.DLL are nested under SHLWAPI.DLL which is nested under WININET.DLL which is under NETREMOTE.EXE

Your efforts are appreciated,

Joe

Ron and I have a suspicion that the problem is Unicode which Win98 doesn't support - however, there is a possible solution that we're going to try over the next couple of days (an MS supplied library that you can link an app with to provide Unicode support on W98).

Still not been able to find my Win98 install CD, makes it a bit tricky to test anything.

Thanks Rob for your quick answer. I hope you will find your Win98 CD again.

I don't have the authority to do this. Try emailing sales@promixis.com pointing them to this thread or explaining the situation in the email, thanks.
