Is there a reason that the Insteon PLM Component thread with links to the component
software was moved from
Promixis, LLC Forums > Girder > Girder5
to
Promixis, LLC Forums > Hardware > Home Electronics Tira-Ira
I hope this isn't a sign that problem concerning the Insteon PLM Component have gotten
to the point where forum threads are being deleted. This really worries me as I don't
believe that the Insteon PLC plugin has had any support for a very long time.

It bothers me too as I've invested quite a bit in Insteon and getting it to work with Girder properly. I bought the PLM exclusively for use with Girder after buying the PLC plugin and having little success with the PLC.
Though I didn't expect longterm support for Mike's plugin, I never thought Promixis would actually seek to cripple itself by eliminating it.

Guys, this will our only comment on this.
Promixis is very sorry it had to come to the point were we had to move the Insteon PLM thread. As you well know we hardly ever delete threads on this forum, so this step was not taken lightly. Mike had already stopped responding by the time we removed it. Also note that the thread has not been deleted but merely taken out of the limelight until Mike clarifies his licensing intent towards his end-users.
February 5th after talking to Mike in a PM we posted this message regarding licensing issues notifying everone of our intent to remove plugins that do not clearly state their licensing by March 1st:
http://www.promixis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19568
We asked Mike to clarify his licensing intentions. He replied that he did not want to use the Promixis provided system and wants to be able to remove his plugin at any time without recourse. He claimed one reason for not using the upload system was because he did not like the license that came with it. Thus we went out of our way to provide a system that allows for selection of the license and even called for people to submit licenses they would like to use.
Sadly he never gave any feedback on this. Please understand that we are not trying to force a specific license on his code, just trying to get clarification. We have even gone as far as asking a few key questions to clarify his license, we don't care what the answers are as long as there is a formal answer.
We are more then happy to restore the thread if Mike decides to answer these simple questions
What about future updates?
Who can make the updates?
Are derivative works allowed?
What happens if you leave?
How about bug fixes?
Define Use that is permitted.

At the request of several of the component users, I will try again at clarifying this.
There is a license included with the component. Its on the about box for the component configuration. The license only grants rights for personal use. No redistribution rights, modification rights, or anything else are granted. In essencse it would be the same rights that most users would expect when buying a commerical application. So if I die or leave or whatever, you certainly can still use the component. No guarantees on bug fixes but I will do the best I can. Think of this as being similar to the Elk component but for free.

...I'm going try to interpret the two requests. My reason is selfish - I want to use insteon, but if I can't use it with girder, I won't use it!
This is what I think I'm hearing
What about future updates? - NO GUARANTEES, WE GET WHAT MIKE PROVIDES
Who can make the updates? -??
Are derivative works allowed? - ??
What happens if you leave? - CONTINUED USE OF THE EXISTING VERSION OF THE PLUGIN IS ALLOWED SHOULD MIKE STOP SUPPORTING IT
How about bug fixes? - NO GUARANTEES, BEST EFFORTS IN THE INTEREST OF THE COMMUNITY
Define Use that is permitted. - NOT SURE WHAT THIS ONE MEANS
Am I close?
Thanks,
K

Mike,
Good to hear from you on this. I personally think your licensing is clear enough.
Same licensing as for the ELK component but at no cost. That's good enough for me.

Plenty good enough for me. Not sure what I would expect from someone who gave me something for free.
