synchronized audio via lan possible ?

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can use Netremote or Girder itself to have synchronised audio (via lan) in different rooms through different htpcs... :)

From what I can read in the forum so far, I haven't found a single attempt that worked correctly solely via LAN and htpcs... is it this difficult ? :confused: I can't tell, I'm just trying to gather information and am of course hoping that some people got it working.

It doesn't matter what software to use as audio server and audio client, as long as I can control it via Girder or Netremote...

If there is no way to have it synchronized via software, feel free to suggest a hardware alternative, preferably not too expensive and purely digital audio. Of course controlable via Girder or Netremote :D

Well any of the software methods I have seen fall short and have a slight delay between zones. Your ear can pick up the tiniest delay so for me that is a not a good way. Others will chime in I imagine.... but that is my opinion.

My Nowplaying setup uses a hardware based method. Since it uses inexpensive 2 channel receivers for the auxiliary zones I use the fact that they have multiple inputs and are IR controllable. So I can just send the correct IR commands to have them switch to a common audio source. So for very little money you get 200watts RMS, switchable line level inputs and a separate tuner for each zone. All this equipment is centrally located and out of site. I just ran the speaker wires to each zone. Its all controllable with NR and G5 with touchscreens.

The fact this can't be done with HTPS is truly dissappointing (since I feel htpc's offer more possibilities than separate hardware, which has each time its limitations).

What hardware exactly are you using for audio tranmission and reception ?

I have a detailed block diagram in my blog... its a DIY setup but works very well.

I am not a bit surprised that there is no perfect way to sync music over the network. It would be seriously difficult to get it perfectly in sync streaming like that.
