Hi amirbd,
welcome to the wonderfull world of Girder ;-)
there are 3 (4) different kinds of nodes you can add:
- group
- multigroup
- command
- eventstring (that's the one I wouldn't realy count...)
make shure you select a command, you can't add an action to any of the other two. (just an idea what might have gone wrong)

Actually there's few dumb questions (if there were, I'd be shot under the Dumb Questions Act a long time ago!), but your problem is (and this is a wild guess) to difficult for most people here. If there's nothing to find under the OS-list, my totally wild guess is that there's a big install error. I'd try to download the whole thing again (it isn't all that big), uninstall Gider and do a complete new installation. I have never seen that problem, neither has (I suspect) anybody else here. Do you have anything extremely rare in your system, or is it a regular setup? I'm by no means an expert, but the installation is just about everything I can think of.

there is nothing under my "OS" action tab. I can add new commands, and attach keyboard keys 'f9' to them. Still there is nothing under 'OS'.
F9 is used to disable/enable input devices, not for learing, for learning you should press the "Learn Event" button.
p.s. I just noticed It says (in the status line at the bottom of the screen), 'no input device selected'. Does this ring a bell to anyone ?
That means you haven't selected an input device (A device to control girder, like keyboard, IR detector, ...) From the menu select File, Settings, Plugins, and select your input plugin.
Anyway, all of this has no relation with the fact that you don't have anything on the "OS" action tab.
Can you open the list under "OS" and it's just empty or you can't open it at all?
Do you have anything on other tabs?
Shay Levy.

Make sure that you have a command selected, not an eventstring or multigroup, when you try to use the drop-down box. The icon for commands looks like a remote lying diagonally (looks the same as the one in the system tray by the clock). The eventstring icon is a grey rectangular box that looks like a button. Here is a picture (linked from the Girder "Getting Started" page http://www.girder.nl/help/gettingstarted/index.php). It shows various commands. Using the picture as an example, you would need to have the "Open Notepad" command selected before you could assign an action to it.

I just downloaded girder (using Win XP Pro), and am trying to follow the "getting started guide". I was able to 'add a commend' and attach an event string ('F9' key). However, under the OS action tab, there is an EMPTY list. Nothing, nada. There is no "execute' option. What am I doing wrong ? How can I make the new command do something ?
Sorry for the stupid question

Please, not everyone at the same time
I know, everyone thinks - "this is such a dumb question, somebody will answer it". Please, if you know what's wrong with my installation (or if there any additional info I can supply), please post (or PM me). I've a lot of experiance in programming, and I really want to learn how to use girder. I just need one working example, and I'll figure it out from there.
Following Ron's "getting started" guide, I'm trying to have one simple command, triggered by the keyboard (I do not have IR connected yet), that will lunch something. I am stuck at the begining as I do not have an "execute" option below the "OS" action tab.
Thanks in advance
Amir
p.s. If there's a forum better suited for dumb questions, please point me in that direction.

Hi Mastiff,
Thanks for the reply.
Here is what I just did.
1. Uninstalled girder (using win xp 'remove software').
2. Removed the 'program Files/girder' directory
3. Run girder324.exe (took it a few days ago from here)
4. In the instalation process I answers "Yes" and "next" until it finished.
5. Statred girder 3.2
there is nothing under my "OS" action tab. I can add new commands, and attach keyboard keys 'f9' to them. Still there is nothing under 'OS'.
Should I install somthing addditonal to the core girder exe ?
Any suggestions would be appriciated, I would hate to give up on girder even before I started enjoying it :-?
Cheers,
Amir

Shay, Ingo
Thanks for the help. I hope the rest of my girder learning curve will be much easier...
Following Shay's post, I did File->Setting->pluging and added the 'keyboard' pluging (and the internet event client and server while am at it).
Trying again,
*). I added a new command and named it "Equal_CMD".
*) Click 'Learn event', I get status msg "Waiting to IR code".
*) Hit a keyboard key ('='), and got a msg "captured IR code". so far so good, I guess.
*) named the enventstring "Equal_Event".
*) added another command ('@' key) and learned it.
I can now press either the '=' key or the '@' key and girder jump to the corrent command.
Still, when I move to the OS tab (standing either on 'Equal_CMD', or the 'Equal_event' string in the tree view on the left) the pull-down list below the OS tab is empty and grayed out.
Any other suggestions... :-?

It works now :D :D :D
I have no idea why it didn't work before (can no replicate the problem now for the life of me :-? ). Thanks everyone for the quick and thoughtful help.
I'm ready to start exploring Girder now !!!
Cheers,
Amir
