View Full Version : Somebody come up with a reliable remote-power-on solution?

I read many threads on the issue of power on through remote and I wonder if anyone has developed a reliable solution to wake up the computer from hibernation?
If an external modem connected to the serial port can wake up a computer, why can't IRMAN do the job? :o
Thanks for your help!

It can't because:
1. It doesn't have power when the computer is off, while your external modem has external power.
2. the modem sends the computer a "RING" signal and the PC wakes up only by that signal. It can be done by changing the internal software of the IRMAN device, but it's not easy.

Hmmm, sounds convincing unfortunately...
However, thinking in terms of solutions: What if the Irman was powered externally (or through the 5V standby)? What kind of command would make the PC wake up. You said, it would not be easy, so you think it might be done :P That's good news.
With people spending so much time and effort on HTPC, there must be a feasible way to turn the PC on remotely. Is UIRT the answer? Should I order Luc's solution? Will it wake up from hibernate or only from standby? :o

If you power it externally then you solved one problem, about the second I wouldn't be able to answer you since I don't know what PIC (Microcontroler) IRMAN uses, and if it's source code is available, But I'm sure someone here have the answers.

On my computer UIRT2 (from Luc) wakes up the computer from hibernate (which I don't use) and standby and STR (Suspend to RAM - power down PC, keep RAM content - what I use)
You can do simple test to check on what situations your board wakes up (If at all ...) You need to short the +5VSB to WOL pin on the WOL connector of your motherboard for 1 second - DO WITH CARE - don't short +5VSB to GND or anything else.

Hi Shay Levy,
thanks for the info. My board (ASUS TUSI-M) seems to wake up quite reliably from all kinds of situations and I haven't experienced any driver problems either. So chances are that it might work.
Just to be sure: My WOL connector has 3 pins: PME, Ground, +5V Standby. Did I understand you correctly that I should short PME and +5V?
Thanks

Yes, Also no harm will be done if you short PME and Ground (Although I think nothing will happen), Just Dont Short +5V to GND :D
