I've read here somewhere in some thread that it can be done, by learning a universal remote a key from the keyboard. So when you press the button on that remote the computer thinks it's a button from the keyboard.

With the right motherboard, you can set "Power On By Keyboard" in the BIOS. This will turn the PC on with a set key combination.
I think standard IR keyboards are connected to the PS/2 port like normal keyboards, so this should still work with an IR keyboard.
All you would need then, would be an IR keyboard receiver and a universal remote control to learn the code...
So it seems like you could do it with no extra electronics work (heh, and losing a standard keyboard) - if that's what you were thinking, then yes it should work... :)

I'll start off by saying that I'm no expert with this, but I'm pretty sure that the way the IRman works is that it's software driven. It won't even pick up a signal unless the computer has already booted up. You would need something that had a separate power source, and some extra electronics that would pick up the IR from the keyboard, and the electronics would have to be tuned(?) to an IR code from the keyboard so not just any IR would turn it on. Then it would have to trigger some sort of relay / switching device to short the power button on the computer to turn it on or off.
Unless I'm completely missing something, I think that is what you would need. Please don't flame me if I'm way off base.

Sorry about the unclear-ness...
My whole point was that to my understanding, what you want to do would require alot more than IRman, and an IR Keyboard. You would need a different IR reciever that was tuned(?) to one ir frequency on your keyboard that would be used specifically for one purpose, turning your computer on. I don't think the IRman would work at all for this.
But like I said, I'm no expert. I would like it if someone had a different explanation because I have thought about doing this in the past, but it seemed like quite a job, so I kind of gave up on it.

Okay, I understand better what you're planning on doing now, I didn't get it at first.
The only thing I can think of now, is that you might still need to do some electronic work, because even if the reciever has external power coming to it, it's only going to send out the acknowledgement via the serial cable (or however you hook it up), what you would have to do is interface with it to intercept the right ir code, and short the power switch after that. The keyboard reciever is still software based (most are at least), which is why the extra circuitry would be necessary to process the recievers commands.
Good Luck

Does anybody know if it would work to connect -in addition to IRMAN-an infrared keyboard to the computer (stripped down to just the sensor) and use this function to turn the computer on? :o

So an infrared keyboard with an external power supply should be fine? :P

Jeff,
that's how I understood it: Cannibalise the IR keyboard and its receiver, mount the IR receiver next to IRMAN (internally), hook the remains of the IR keyboard up to the HTPC and the learn the space IR code (or whatever) with Pronto. THis should work, shouldn't it? :P
