It's not a problem of windows XP.... but of the plug... because i'm under win2k.
it seems that the plug not initialize the conection with the com port! SadMan will u find a solution?

Heya,

since I wasn't able to find any plugin for this remote that'd work w/ g3.2, I've tried to code my own one.
It's still beta but it seems to work but I'd like to have some ppl to test it before I release it so if anyone's interested and has pinnacle's 41 key remote, drop me an email at girder<a t>sadman.net

addendum:

for those who are unable to read the thread to the end and mail me with requests for driver, download URL is http://sadman.net/pctvs/

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
well, since it's time for my vacation and i'll be offline til 08/09 and i didn't get much feedback from the ppl i've sent plugin to (replied 2 out of 10), i'm putting this test plugin at http://god.sk/pctvs01tst.zip
it works for me in w2k (so does it for one more guy), write your success/failure stories and don't forget to add what OS do you run

now it's time for some sun and sea 8)

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
sure but you didn't respond to my next mail that has a testing util attached, did you?
but yes, you were one of the only 2 that took their time to provide any feedback :-)

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
sure, I'll take a look at it tomorrow as i just came from an airport (to find out that this great pinnacle bundled tv recording sw is a pile of shit and messed up all recordings)

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
well, i found a stupid typo that caused problem with opening port at startup and made a new version (the only problem is that i don't have the most recent source here so i'm not sure if this version is completely ok)
well, try and see
http://god.sk/pctvs01b.zip

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
it could be caused by your toy version of windows :-)
i've recently installed w98 to test something so i can check if plugin works in it when i come home

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
w9x/ME should be declared illegal to use (anyway i really don't get why ppl use it)

well, here's v0.2 that fixes bug in w9x caused by incompatible API w/ NT/W2k

http://god.sk/pctvs02.zip

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
does anyone else experience this problem? does it happen in w2k too?

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
well, i just tested it and found such behaviour to be true - but only in w98
for now i can't find the problem because outside girder my test program gets all keypresses fine
i'll have a 2nd look at it but it's problematic because w98 is unusable so rarely have time to boot it

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
yes, it can be done, i was even thinking about it (having checkbox in setup window to let you decide which behaviour you want)
all i need is a bit of free time (possible at the weekend when all the stuff that occupies me atm should be finished) and i put out a newer version

sadman
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
v0.3:

it's possible to differentiate between single presses and autorepeated commands (the latter have -R added (e.g. PCTV-Up-R))
made some changes that could fix those occasional crashes on girder exit (or they may make it worse)
of course maybe nothing works anymore

Hi.

Mmmhh. OK i'm a newbie and so maybe it's clear for you why i don't get this working. The remote get's signals with WinLIRC (but i can't configure it :-(). With girder and this PlugIn it seems there's no input signal from the remote and so girder won't learn anything. :-?

Can you help!?

I've downloaded the plugin for the Pinnacle PCTV Remote. I'm using Windows XP. At first the plugin would not work, so i did some messing around with the settings. Finally i figured out what i have to do to make it work....The IR receiver is plugged into com1 (which was what i had it set on in girder). In order to get it to work, I have to go to the PCTV plugin settings where you change the com port and simply click ok (not even changing anything). Is the plugin not opening the com1 port when girder is opened?? I have to do this every time i open girder (which is very annoying). Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?? Other than that..the plugin works great!

Great thanks Sadman for yout plugin.

It works great - after the port is once activated manually by entering the plugin's options. I am using Win2k, my IR receiver is plugged into com1.

OK, the port is opened correctly with me now (Win2k).

What do you mean with 'not the latest version'. Could there be any other bugs? I haven't discovered any so far.

Thanks again for this great plugin. I hope Ron can post it on the girder site soon.

Greetings, MagCap.

Perhaps the file was down only temporarily.
If not try to use another software for downloading.

Sadman, just want to thank you for the dll. I installed it last saturday and it works great! I'm using it to control the soundcard and powerdvd. Thanks!

Belgrader
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
Well, I didn't find that dll works. I've tested it under win98, my IR is plugged in COM 1. Girder's message is that the device is enabled, but there is no reply for any of the keys on my remote, no mather if I change plugin's settings (com 2, 3...). So, I wonder what could it be?

Belgrader
October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
Thanks Sadman, plugin is now functional in win98, so I could finally upgrade to Girder 3.2 (I mostly use Girder with PCTV remote). I had some time to test it, and I found that it works correctly. Only, it seems that sometimes you need to press a button on a remote twice to cause an action. It could be annoying when you' re trying, for example to change a TV channel typing its two digit number, it's pretty certain that you'll have to try again. I think that it has nothing to do with my win version, cause I didn't experience that problem with Nagy Pal's plugin in Girder 3.0 and 3.1. Did you find anything like?
Anyway, nice work and big step ahead!

October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
In addition to my latest post, it happenes to me sometimes (but very rarely) that pressing one button several times continiously (EPG for example) is being recognized like pressing some other button (Off button).

Is it possible to use this plugin with my older PCTV Pro with the 24 button remote? Also....I can't seem to figure out how to install and activate the plugin anyway...I am a newbie to this and just tried it yesterday for the first time and got frustrated.

Thanks

October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
Thanks for the PCTV Plugin Sadman.
I am using it with the 24 key remote under Windows 98 and it works great with one exception. When closing girder, Windows crashes and I get the message:
Error caused by invalid page in module 0000:01b51531 ...
This is probable not the message which will appear under english Win98, I tried to translate it from the german version.
When I Disable Input Device or Toggle input device before closing girder everything is ok.
Does anybody else also has this problem or has an idea how to correct this?
Thanks

October 13th, 2002, 12:55 PM
Yes the pctv plugin is the only one when using girder. Of course I have also loaded the software-plugin which includes the assignment of the keys. I also exit the original remote tool from the pinnacle pctv software before using girder.

I saw a question asked about this, but there was no answer posted.

I have the older Pinnacle 24 key remote, not the newer 41 key remote. I downloaded and tested version 0.3 of the plugin and it does not work with the 24 key remote.

I had this working on older version of Girder with the DocS plugin, so I know that my configuration works. Just can't get it to work with this new plugin and new Girder version.

I am using WinXP, and the IR receiver is on COM3. Yes - I configured the plugin, but get nothing - no flashes of tray icon at all - on any COM port.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please? Sadman - can you tell us if we should even expect this plugin to work with 24 key remote?

Thank you!

I'm sorry. I will answer my own question.

Yes, it does work with the 24 key remote. But you must re-learn any learned IR codes, as the identifiers are different. No trouble. Done. PCTV remote back in action. In fact, it works much better than the older plugins. Thank you Sadman and RonB.

Great work with the plugin. It has worked fine here in my room. But now I have discovered a problem. There is an overlap between my "new" Pinnacle remote and other remotes. More specifically Panasonic VCR and Yamaha receiver remotes. (I haven't tried other remotes) The signals collide resulting in incorrect operations being performed. Is this a problem with the remote or is your plugin too generous when accepting the signal?

Hello Choy

I have a Panasonic TV at home and the same problems you've mentioned; with the original Pinnacle drivers. So I doubt there are any possibilities within the Grider driver himself. The remotes seems to be too similar.

However it seems as the TV remote affects the PCTV but the PCTV remote doesn't affect the TV.

if you are refering to Girder 4, than I'm going to dissapoint you, Girder it selfs has nothing to do with this problem, its a driver/remote/hardware issue.

I really don't know where I was wrong, when other people are using this without a problem (as I can read in this forum). Did anyone had something like this?

Try disabling different codes for key repetition. That's the last change made to the plugin, and before that I think it worked well for everybody.

I'm using the PCTV remote, plugin V3, Girder 3.2.6.b under WinXP SP1. It works ok for me. I have the "different codes for key repetition" feature disabled, but I've tried to enable it and the plugin still works ok.

Here is a link (http://www.girder.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2138&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=36) to the exact post that includes a link to version 3 of the plugin.

I've noticed that the receiver picks up signals from my vcr's remote too (AIWA)
I'm not sure if something can be done about it if any button leads to code sequence that's identical to any that's produced by pinnacle remote

I've just installed the new Girder (3.2.6b) and installed this plugin (0.4 version I think it is). It seems to work great. I'm glad someone finally wrote a plugin for the 3.2.x Girder series. I was waiting for this for a long time (but didn't had the time nor the knowledge to do it myself).

Now I have to reprogram the whole remote, but hey, it's finally working with the new Girder so I'm happy anyway.

Well, it certainly worked for me. I've downloaded the latest version of Girder from www.girder.nl and then downloaded the latest plugin (see first post in this thread for URL). I then extracted the dll file from the zip file of the plugin to my Girder/plugins directory and restarted Girder. Then I edited the configuration and enabled the plugin. After that it seemed to work like a flaw.

One note though. There seem to be two different versions of the PCTV remote control. I think there's one with 41 keys and one with less. This plugin only works for this 41 keys version, so make sure you have that one.

I've installed your plugin and I'm having some problems. I noticed that my computer now also responds to signals from the remote I'm using for my stereo set. When I push a button on the remote of my stereo sometimes Winamp goes to the next song (I've assigned PCTV-Up signal to this command). This can sometimes be quite annoying as you might understand. I didn't have this problem when I was using Girder 3.1.

Also, your plugin creates a log file in the root directory c:\. Now this can be handy in some cases but I think it's only filling up space on my drive so I was wondering if the logging was there to stay, or that you are planning on changing these (make it an option maybe?).

Well, I hope you can help me out here. The first problem I'm having is more annoying than the logging thing though.

Well, it seems to have fixed the problem. I've tried to send some commands using the remote of my stereo, nothing happened. And the log file is gone too :).

One other thing I've noticed while using this plugin. Sometimes the plugin misinterprets (not sure if I spelled that right :)) the commands I'm sending. Sometimes I push the up button on my remote control which should tell Winamp to go down one song in the playlist. But instead of doing that it goes up one song (the opposite direction). This mostly happens when I send one command and then send the same command shortly after the other, without actually keeping the button pressed down (that would result in a -R command I think).

python

version 5 - no reapiting, but incorect detecting of buttons and very slow reaction (1-5 sec).[/img]

sadman
January 11th, 2003, 02:59 PM
so let's try to clear it up - you need to hold the button for 1-3 secs to get it recognized?
the difference between v0.4 and v0.5test is just more aggressive filtering of not-so-good looking codes coming from IR dongle attached to serial port
the only thing that comes to my mind is that in XP there's something changed in serial port handling and it doesn't behave like w2k i got here

do you see unusual CPU load in task manager when pressing keys?
is anyone else with XP (no, i won't install that crappy OS myself :P) experiencing such behaviour?

python
January 11th, 2003, 03:45 PM
CPU usage max - 10 %
expl: when i press UPP-ARROW girder detect next commands :
Mute, Vole-, 8, FF
after - lopping changes mute and down :(

in Girder 3.1 whith PCTV plugin - 100% CPU usage :) but work correctly.

January 12th, 2003, 01:37 AM
I'm running Windows XP too but I'm not experiencing any such behavior. The keys are getting processed just in time. The only time it may take some time is when my computer was busy. For instance when I've just played a game it sometimes takes longer to proces the key, but that are exceptions. In general the keys are getting processed almost immediatly.

it should support remote with less buttons (24 i guess)
also serial port handling was rewritten a bit so it might stop working for somebody but of course maybe it helps someone else :-)

I haven't tested 04 version of plugin (actually, I haven't visiting this forum for nearly a month), and I tried v05 yesterday (together with newest version of Girder). Everything is working just fine (so fine, that I immideatly converted my old gml from Girder 3.1 to Girder 3.2). Now I can finally try out that LUA language.
BTW, someone earlier posted a message about delays between pressing a button and detecting a command (approx. 1-3 sec). I had that problem too, with old plugin for Girder 3.0 (written by ... ???). One (fine) day the remote just stopped to work correctly. I tried everything, form changing Girder/plugin settings, to changing batteries ... Nothing helped. And, one (realy fine) day (2-3 weeks later) everything suddenly started to work. I can only guess that it has to be something with windows and/or some program I installed or deinstalled. I have no clue and I can only hope that it will not happend again. Anyway, THANKS for this great stuff!

Find a command for which you want to change IR code, select EventString, click Learn Event, press a button and that's it.

It would be great if you *sadman* or one of you others could help me get started...

1) When loading the PCTV Plugin V.5 (without pinnacle's remote app running in the back) there is no response whatsoever (no flashing tray-icon) to any key-pressing, the same when I try to train some basic commands... any advise?!

2) Do I have to run any other plugin to make girder work with the PCTV, DScaler, PowedDVD...?[/b]

v.4 is working for me :D (see above), v.5 doesn't
Do you have any idea why?

However, thanks to your plugin I can get started with girder, which is just great!

had to browse back in this thread to find out what the change between 0.4 and 0.5 *grin*

well, if v0.4 works for you, you should use it
there's no feature change in 0.5, it's just changed serial port handling

and since i don't have idea for any feature change, you should be fine w/ v0.4 for a long time

After trying to get this program working and trying all the versions of the plugin, I was getting a little frustrated. With the more recent versions the box in the middle bottom that tells you what key is being pressed (i think) was going nuts with different commands.

I didnt want to look at the dongle thingy any more so i put a book infront of it....the commands stopped :o . Its like a sci-fi.

From what i gather its picking up IR from somewhere. No IR from sun or flouro's (dont have either here at the moment). So again with the frustration.

Would this thread be better in the general forum?

Cheers,

Edge

I'm using v0.5 together with latest Girder on Win2000. Everything is mostly OK, but ... Form time to time, Girder gets mute command (sometimes quite often, so I must turn girder off - it's really frustrating). Sensor isn't under direct sunlight, nor neon light (except in the evening; frequency of getting mute command, as I have noticed, doesn't depends on this). Sometimes I get really random commands, like buttons Radio-Winamp and EPG-RadLight, which causes these programs to start. Only thing that crossed my mind on solving this is to place mute under another button, but this doesn't seems like nice solution, especially because mute command isn't the only that appears at random. Is anybody having something like this?

Best regards,
Zarko

v0.4 just goes wild on my system, non-stop sending all sort of codes. v0.5 and v.05 test are way better. v0.5 test is sending less random codes than v0.5. Beside random mute command, other commands that are sent often are '8' and 'Down'. I don't know if this information may be of some use, but I hope that sadman could suggest me some solution to this. Anyway, beside these problems, Girder+pctv plugin are making my computer-use much more fun ...

Well, I just got Girder and am using the Pinacle Plugin Sadman developed.

Works GREAT!! But then I got random commands every now and then, am thinking it could be due to my lighting so let me try it some more.

Great work!

Girder GOOD!! SadMan GOOD!

I just noticed that there is a SourceForge project running for Girder Plugins. It would be really nice if this plugin would be made available through that, so we can make changes to it. I've noticed that the plugin sometimes responds to the remote of my stereo. And sometimes, it misinterprets the buttons I press on the remote. For instance, I press the down button, but the event for the up button is fired. I didn't have this problem when I used Girder 3.1, with a different plugin, so it can't be the lightning, as I haven't changed the position of the sensor. If I could see the source, maybe I could change some things to make it work perfectly :).

Hello,

I'm a "happy custumer" of your plugin for some time.

I have a very simple question you certainly know the answer for: I'm doing a cable extention through the wall. I'm reusing an old network cable with 8 conductors... one short from the 9 pin plug. Can you tell me wich pins are used for this control so I can choose wich to discard?

Thank you,

pins 1 and 9 shouldn't be needed for remote

Hi sadman,

I use your PCTV plugin and it works nice. However it restricts the user to only be able to use the Pinnacle remote control. But the receiver is able to receive signals from some other remotes, too. Could you please adjust the driver to make them usable ( i.e. give their keys names based on the signal they transmit ) ?

I would also be interrested in taking a look into the source code to apply such changes.

Two weeks ago, I moved from Win2000 to WinXP, installed Girder (of course:) and I still have problem with Mute command - it gets called from time to time when I press something else. Or gets called when I'm even not using remote. It's not too often, but it will be nice if this could be solved. Sadman, is it possible for you to reveal your source code, so someone could improve it if you don't have a time to deal with this? I saw someone with a same problem offered help ... I have a lot of programming expirience, but not with a this kind of thing, nor I know exactly what sort of data is sent through serial port (i.e. how does the signal looks like and how to recognise pressed button from it). But, I can give it a try ...

Anyway, thanks again for great plugin (not completly perfect, but VERY close to that).

Hi,

I see that there are still troubles with the PCTV remote. Because I had also trouble with interferences from other remotes with my old plugin(girder 3.1), I decided to rewrite the plugin (now for girder 3.2).
It works fine for me now without interference from other remotes (OS: winXP).

settings options:

- Comport selectable
- Enable/disable button second function (repeat code)
- Baud rate
- Repeat code offset
- Several options for interference

If you want to try it, you can download it from the following link:

I've got a problem with the plugin 0.5 and girder.
I had to press the button a long time before an action work under showshifter (onbly with play/pause/stop). I had to use a multi-command with multiple same action in order to work
Do you know why?

when you look at the status bar of girder (where received events are shown), do you see your keypresses instantly or is there any problem?

Some of you were having trouble with random signals making girder sometimes run like crazy with the pctv plugin. I am still using v 0.4.

Recently I installed a new scanner. Now, whenever the scanner is connected to my pc it seems to send a whole bunch of commands to my system which interfere either with the pctv plugin or with girder itself making girder run any commands I assigned in my groups.

The solution was easy for me. Pulling out the power plug of the scanner.
So when I will use my scanner in the future I will always exit girder before that. Seems like a little handycap but since I am not constantly scanning this won't be a problem for me.

Hi,

It's been a long time i haven't play with girder, but i am back !

I have downloaded your plugin Jurgen, and it works nearly perfect ....

In fact, i am trying to use button repeat code, and i have seen the following behavior :
When i turn off the option to convert button repeat code to button code, girder receive standard event before receiving the repeat event. So it's a bit hard to learn girder the button repeat codes. I can achieve this by typing them manually in the GML file but it's not very easy.
Another thing that seems to be a problem is that in the same config, the first code that is received (non repeat) is changing. In fact, it depends on the precedent key that has been pressed.

I know that my english is bad so i will give you some examples :
first column is the key pressed on the remote, second is the first code received by girder, third is the second event received by girder if i have pressed the key for a long time.

1 49
2 50
3 51
4 52 116
5 536
6 546 118
6 548
7 558 119
8 569
8 569 120
9 570
9 570 121
9 571 121
0 581 122

Well, i think you have understand the problem : third digit of the first event shouldn't be received, it is the value of the third digit of the preceiding event if the preceiding event is a repeat code.

So if you have a little time to spend for us (me !) here are my suggestions to make your plugin perfect :
1 - Add the ability to receive a repeat code without the standard code before
2 - Correct the problem with the third digit
3 - Replace the three digit codes by full text, for example "key1" and "key1repeat"

In all cases, thanks a lot for the work you have already done.

You should see the events in the lower right hand of Girder. If you are unsure, goto the plugin download area and get the logger plugin...

The Girder icon in tray flashes. The logger app shows the buttons pressed. But nothing happens in the beyond tv3 program.

I am using Beyond TV3 with a pinnacle PCTV pro remote control (41 button) and the IR receiver that came with the TV card/remote.

I even used an older plugin version of 0.3 and also wanted to try an older version of girder since i did not see anyone in this forum talking about girder 3.3, but could not find an older version of the software.

I read the instructions on Beyond TV3 site about setting up a 3rd party remote using the girder and they don;t mention anything about changing setting/confguration in the Beyond TV app itself.

So where do you think I am going wrong?

Thanks

I'm having the same problema as MiljBee (I think). This is:

When using repeat-codes, if I maintain a key pressed:
- First I get the non-repeat code for that key, which is normal.
- Then I get several times the repeating code for that key, which is also normal.
- But then, I start getting codes from OTHER keys. The "PCTV Up-R" and "PCTV Down-R" codes, to be more precise.
- Since that moment I only get "PCTV Up-R" and "PCTV Down-R" codes when pressing any key. The only way to getting it normal again is to restart Girder.

It seems a buffer overrun to me.

That makes the repeat-codes unuseful, because unexpected actions are triggered when maintaining a key pressed. Please, could the author take a look at it?

Tested with WinXP SP1, Girder 3.2.9 and PCTV plugin 0.5.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
It seems this topic has been up for some time but I just entered the world of Girder.

First of all I would like to note that the PCTV plugin is excellent and big thanks to Sandman for coding it.
However, I have a small problem I would like to mention:

-->Girder is receiving events from my remote, even when I have it left alone on the table. It's not the remote, cause I removed the batteries and it still happens.

I get various events but mostly PCTV-Up-R, PCTV-Left-R, PCTV-Down-R. I get many events like this but mostly the 'repeat' codes.
I dont really need to use those, so it doesnt cause me too much trouble. The real problem is that because of those (I assume), sometime I have to press a button twice, or even several times for it to work.

I am on:
Windows XP Sp1
Girder 3.3.7
PCTV plugin 0.5 (showing 0.4) in Girder

Has anyone else had this and solved it ?

Thanks,
Invader.
