Luc and I would like to announce the Complete Guide to UIRT2. It combines what is on Luc's site with my detailed assembly and test instructions. This is the first time the site is available to the public so please take a look, provide comments on missing or incorrect information, and suggestions for improving the site.
Enjoy,
Don

Thanks, Don!
It's nice to see that so many have been able to take advantage of this design -- and its also nice when others take up the slack when us developers run short on time!

EXCELLENT!!
Thanks for the great resource. I am just in the process of integrating the UIRT2 with my computer and AV Equipment, so the timing for me is phenomenal (sp?).

Suggestion:
Connecting the IR Receiver
...Use a general purpose housing for the IR receiver and a general purpose two strand wire. Shielded wire reduces noise interference and is recommended to increase reliability....
Top picture is the "old" style receivers, bottom picture is the current style receivers.
Verify the pin out of your receiver and connect accordingly.
Tip = +5V.
Ring = Data.
Barrel = GND.
You might want to mention that if you don't use shielded wire, you'll need 3 conductor wire.

Thanks for pointing out the error. This section is updated and should be more accurate now.

It would be great if you would host the "UIRT2 Protocol for Jon Rhees v.1.6 firmware" doc on your site. It is only available on this forum as far as I know.

The goal of my web guide is to only supply information related to building the UIRT2. I have no intentions to suppply any of the hardware or software required but do happily provide links to sites that do have the right "stuff".

Anyone try setting up the UIRT2 with a P4S533 MB? I'm looking for where to hook up the power - this MB seems not to have a WOL feature. It does, however have jumpers for USB device wake-up (1 Amp) and keyboard wake up (300mA), but they are just jumpers. If I connect the power to the UIRT2 to a jumper juction, will it work or will I hose the card?
If I can't do the jumper thing, where can I get power to the UIRT2 on this MB?

Try going to the guide again, external connections section. I added more detail on getting +5V to the UIRT2 if you don't have WOL or WOM.
Basically, you need to tap into any of the connectors coming off the power supply. You won't get WOL to work but it does not sound like your mobo supports it anyway. UIRT2 can not send IR commands nor power-up without standby power being supplied. Other than that the unit should provide full functionality.

i found dat R5 was missing from part list.
from the picture, it likes a 10ohm resistor as R6.
could u update it?
BTW, without R5, the UIRT2A is still functional, rite??
TIA

Hi,
I prited my own pcb using the layout given in the uirt2 website. I was able to flash the 4 MMHz 1.8 firmware, but when I tested using the test program. It was not responding to any command sent to it. I have tryed to program it with and with out the crystal and I still could not get any response from the device.
Thanks for any help on how to fix this.

@jigc - I updated the instructions to be a bit clearer about tR5 being optional in the UIRT2A.
edward - Maybe you can try using version 1.7 and see what happens. I know it used to work on that version. Maybe the test program, which was written before 1.8, might not work on the newer version.
