I'd be interesting in seeing the schematic, as I'm not quite following your description. Nice work btw.

I built the UIRT2 from scratch and all went well. However when I was done I was presented with a problem. The unit was not going to be located in front of my entertainment center. I couldn't control anything from there. Also if I put more then a few LEDs on the external IR port I would have blown one of the channels on the ULN2003A.
This got me thinking and looking for an inexpensive IR distro system. Of course their aren't any.
I set to work to figure out how to build one.
On the Aux IR out I just tied it directly to 5V...no resistor.
Feed that signal to an external ULN2003A via a 1/8 mono cable. I tied all the input lines together so the signal from the UIRT2 hits all the inputs on the chip (all 7). Then I ran the outputs to 6 1/8 mono audio jacks and 1 standard LED. I can plug emitters into these jacks. I am supplying the nesscary 12V for the emitter via an external power supply. I tied the common for the 12V supply to the common coming from the UIRT2. Thats it!
When I transmit IR it goes out the emitters on the UIRT2, the six outputs on the splitter, and I can see feedback via the LED on the splitter.
I can draw a quick schematic and/or take photos if anyone is interested.

Not the greatest drawing but it shows you what I'm doing.
