View Full Version : UIRT2 programmed fine - girder error: Cannot find 1st char

I'm using the same computer/serial cable/comm port for both programming & Girder. Programing runs perfectly but Girder says:

Cannot find 1st char

:x 'arg'

anyone have any ideas? :(

Is it not "Cannot read 1st char" ?

This means that the UIRT does not respond.

Is the jumper on the correct location and did you install the crystal after programming?

I programmed the UIRT with the crystal in it.
The jumper was moved back after programming.
Same serial cable & port were the ones used to program the UIRT.

The test app seems to send commands but no response from the UIRT.

It would be nice to have an app that verified that the PIC code was installed correctly.

I have no idea whats up...

Can you please confirm if it's "cannot find 1st char" or "cannot read 1st char".
I never saw the first error, and if you really receive this one it looks to me like a wrong plugin.
Make sure you use the correct plugin wich corresponds with the girder version you are running.

Yes, I posted the wrong error. It is the standard error you have seen. I have the latest plug-in. I have downloaded it recently.

Luc,

Same problem here. I didn't adjust anything on the UIRT I received from. Just solderd the receiver and provided 5V to the card via the WON connector.

Can you both please tell wich version of Girder you are running and which plugin version you use (where did you download it?).
This info is required to be able to help.

If possible can you verify if the 5V is present on the PIC and what is the level on pin 4 (reset).

Luc,

I reprogrammed the uirt and its working with the test program.

Could you please look at my previous message concerning versions and the levels on some pins, I need this info to be able to help.

5vdc at inputs to PCB (from computer power supply plug)

PIC...
Pin4 = .64vdc steady
Pin14 = 5vdc

I have programmed the PIC again, no errors in programming.

still get error when Girder loads

The level at pin 4 is wrong it should be approx 5VDC but if you did this measurement with the comm cable connected and the comm port closed then it's normal. ( in fact it isn't pin 4 should then be -0.6V)
When you disconnect the comm cable pin 4 should be at 5V. If this is OK you could remove (or lift one side of) ZD1 and give it another try.

If the above doesn't work and the level at pin 4 still doesn't raise to 5V then there must be something wrong with the components at pin 4.

Hope this helps.

Pin 4
- with serial cable connected: -.63 vdc
- otherwise 5VDC

is it possible that the 16F is bad even though the programmer says it takes the HEX file fine?

The 16F was BAD... replaced the chip, worked first shot!
