The reason I don't use it because I didn't know it. The reasons I won't be using it are

The protection scheme would not be possible.
The pro's of this are just to minimal with our current and old computers it would not be a big difference. 900 kilobytes even the oldest harddisk should read that in 1-2 seconds.

My protection scheme is aimed against small time crackers that want to get rid of the copyright notice and sell girder with their hardware or somehow and thus be violating the copyright. Not to mention profiting from my hardwork.

If there was a way to make UPX compress an executable and NOT allow it to be decompressed I would use it, but since it is opensource this will not happen.

Please understand that this is the only way I can protect my work just a little. And I'm not willing to give this up. Maybe I'm being paranoid and maybe my scheme is so simple that any 1st grader will be able to remove it. Time will tell, though i don't hope so.

I have no problem with implementing another scheme that is compatible with an exe compressor, but i have no time to devise one.

I'm sorry for the no go on this one.

I've checked their homepage it looks like they are oriented towards wrapping non-free apps. They have all sorts of stuff for registering etc. I don't want to force the users to register. It looks like a nice system i'll keep it in mind.. for if anyone breaks my super-duper  protection.

Hi Ron,

I know Girder has some checks in it's main executable to check if any program has altered it and if so to display a warning that the exe has been tampered with.

Is there any reason why you dont use UPX to compress the main exe file. UPX files load much faster. When I compressed the last version it compressed down to around 230K which is quite a saving and loading times are better on slower machines however your little check is rather annoying.

I do understand why you have it and I think it is a great idea however is there anyway you can release Girder already compressed and still have the alteration selfcheck.

Yours

John

No probs mate.

It was only a routine suggestion and I understand why you need to protect your work.

Have you ever thought of using softwrap to protect your work. It's free.
