Go look at this in the FAQ:

I like Method 2, detection based.

Im building a HTPC which I'd like to completely drive using a single remote. As such, I'll need to launch and control several different applications, but depending on which application is active (probably in the foreground) I'll need the SAME remote button to do different things (but I dont want to use a universal remote and change mode on the remote as thats painful - the mode should change depending on the app in use)

e.g. when I'm running MainLobby (a nice front-end for starting stuff) I want the remotes direction keypad to be the cursor keys for selecting different buttons. When MainLobby starts winamp, I'd like the remote's direction keypad to perform different actions (not just sending cursor moves)

Can anyone point me towards an example of doing this? Mapping the same remote buttons to different actions depending on the app?

Also, does anyone know if I can also get an event when MainLobby (or any other app for that matter) gets focus for the first time and send an event to it?
