View Full Version : Help Please ... External AC/DC Power Source for UIRT2 ?

Hi everyone,

I have recently received my external UIRT2 unit from Luc and it works fine using a WOL cable to get +5V power.

Unfortunately, I need to bring the UIRT2 unit on the road with me!

The unit was installed in a Microsoft Mouse for portability (using pin 6 and 9 for power and ground), but I am still trying to find an external AC/DC adaptor that I can carry with me to supply +5v DC power to the UIRT2.

Does anyone know if I can use an AC adaptor that supplies +4.5V or a +6V adaptor with 0.3A without damaging the unit. Your help would be much appreciated...

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks Antonio for the info,

I do have many +5V AC adaptor, but they all have different levels of amps output ex: I have one that is +5V with 1.0A output.

I am concerned to connect this AC adaptor because I do not know what are the Volt and Amps requirements of the UIRT2.

Do you know what are the power requirements of the unit ?

Thanks for your help,

I'll second that. Use the +5V 1A supply; it is plenty adequate.

Why not a 5v supply?
If you have a 6v I think that is very easy to get 5v from it just adding a 78L05 and a capacitor.

Hello Dan

I donīt know power requirements for UIRT2 but Iīm sure with +5V 1.0A works fine.

the device requires 5VDC, it will draw as much current as it needs.

Hi,

One idea no-one has suggested is to take +5V power from a USB port. Yes... I know your UIRT will have 2 leads & occupy 2 ports, but at least it will be a simply plug & play ;-) activity to get it powered & working.

Just take an old USB cable, hack one end off, split out the red & black wires, then hook them up.

Works for me.

Now... where can I find a USB/RS232 converter?

Andy.

From that first link...

You could of course build the gameport version. If you're not into gaming or MIDI then you won't even miss the port. Or if you do, you could always build a passthrough version.

Remember that if you decide to feed the uirt with external power, be sure that if you want to use a 7805, that it need 3 volt difference to work. So at least 9v is needed to make the 7805 work

Hi there.

My UIRT2 seems to work fine with a butchered PS2 mouse lead. The PS2 port should be able to provide 500ma.

Just a though.

I'm using the 5V PS/2 from a mouse or keyboard port - this isn't a problem since I'm using a gyration wireless KB/Mouse which has a USB receiver. Works fine without the need for another wall wart clogging up the power strip.
