The Abit BG7 motherboard has WOL but doesn't have a connector! I assume that somehow WOL occurs via the PCI bus. Is there any other way to signal the PC to wake up? What about the serial ring?

The UIRT2 has 4 buffered outputs, one is dedicated to the WOL feature. If your board does not have a WOL connector you need to get +5V standby from somewhere else to power the UIRT. You could use the WOL connector off the UIRT2 to connect to the PWR-ON pins on the mobo (pins 6-8 of the FPIO4 connector). This would disable the case power on switch but you could assign a mouse movement or keyboard hot key to perform the Power on function.

Would I use the FPIO4 pins to power the uirt or use them as a way of turning on the PC? Couldn't I just run them in parallel with the power switch and not have to disconnect that?

Mike,
The FPIO4 pins 6,8 connect to the power switch on the front of the case, so it should be a +5V standby source and thus can be used to power the UIRT2. Read the info on buffered outputs in the external connection section of the Guide. It explains things fairly well and should allow you to design a method for getting the UIRT2 buffered outputs connected to the FPIO4 pins to give you what you want.
Whatever you do make sure it is safe and doesn't fry your mobo -big drag.

Thanks for the info Dan.
Two tips for the guide......
1. Don't unplug the IR detector with power on - it cooks the tsop4838
2. Don't accidentally connect the WOL connector upside down - it isn't key'd
I managed to fry both the PIC and ULN2002 :)
