i've searched the forum for an explaination or a site that may explain it but i couldn't find it.
would anyone please explain to me what UIRT2 is?
how is it different from an IR Receiver like the ones you can make at www.lirc.org?

sorry if this is a dumb question.. but i just want to learn :)

Hello,

Lirc (as winlirc) is a very, very simple and cheap, just a IR receiver and a few components. With lirc your pc does all the work decoding ir signal from remote.

UIR is more advanced (but still cheap). They receive IR signal and decode (since they have a microprocessor) leaving your pc free to do other things.

UIRT is even more advanced(still cheap), T is for tranceiver, so you can receive and send IR signals.

UIRT2 is near estate-of-art (and cheap), with then you can power-on PC and control virtually any external devices attached to your UIRT2 board

IMHO, UIRT2 rules... sorry for the bad English and regards,
Mauro

awesome.. i'd like to build a UIRT2 .. is there a good web site(s) for getting started?

what is IMHO?

and lastly.. does any remote work with these devices or is compatability an issue? i assume that all will work, but i feel it's best to ask and be positive. :)

thanks for the info so far! :D

Try here: http://users.skynet.be/sky50985/

As for compatibility with remotes: I really do not know, I build a LIRC-like device because UIRT2 is *not supported* by LIRC or WinLIRC, and I am experimenting with those too. But people seem happy about UIRT2, and I probably will build myself one of those too.

As for the LIRC like device: Though the PC needs to decode the IR stream, I had no problems with response, also not when controlling my PC while a DVD was playing. (1Gh PIII). You'll find my device here: http://www.cybermaus.homeip.net/InfraRed/InfraRed.htm

Hello MykeL

Well UIRT2 works virtually with any IR remote. My experience with then says that most remotes works great, but if you have a hard to use type people on this forum can help you.

Mauro

I had a look at those "Serial Port Receivers" that work with Lirc, but then I found out that the computer has to do all the work. Which can slow the computer down. Even to a complete stop from what I've read.

So I got myself the kit from Luc (UIRT2a). I built it, and it worked first time. Infact I'm having more problems trying to get my head around Girder then I did with building the UIRT2a.

In my case, when playing CD or DVD remote control doesn´t work with single serial IR receiver
