i recently got an assembled UIRT2 and i'm having trouble getting it working. I am a UIRT/Girder newbie.

It's attached to the serial port & WOL connectors, the IR receiver is getting 5V, however the test app doesn't seem to be getting any response (it says 'sends:23 DD' for GetVersion), and the Girder plugin says the hardware failed to initialize.

Also i plugged the serial cable into another PC (WOL cable still plugged into the HTPC) and it's not getting any response either.

What is the next step in troubleshooting this?

Thanks,
Faron

didi you check the serial port ? right click anywhere in the test app (default is com2)

OK, here's what i have so far.

My UIRT2 works (the test app sends & gets response) UNLESS there is a recv'r or emitter plugged in. If either is plugged in, i get no response.

Also, if i plug in a 'blinker' emitter (one that lights up a LED when it's emitting), it is lit up continuously.

I have tried multiple emitters/receivers.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks,
Faron

it must be a short in the emitter or the reciever circuit, you need to do some debugging with a mutlimeter.

debugging with a multimeter? OK.

I don't have any idea where/how to start--is there a FAQ or anything on how to do this?

What I mean is you have to check the voltages or currents on the uirt with a multimeter so that you can identify the problem in the connections.
But it looks like you don't have much electronics expirience.
And I am afraid there is no one simple FAQ to explain this, you have to do quite a readup on basic electronics. :(
Sorry I can't help more

Strange problem...

My UIRT2 works (the test app sends & gets response) UNLESS there is a recv'r or emitter plugged in. If either is plugged in, i get no response.

Also, if i plug in a 'blinker' emitter (one that lights up a LED when it's emitting), it is lit up continuously.

The blinker emitter you are using has most likely a mono jack and these don't work on the UIRT2, you could change it's wiring to a stereo jack using the connection diagram on my website.
You tried several receivers, did you also use standard ones?
Most (if not all) Xantech types have a different wiring and operate on 12V, these have a resistor and zenerdiode in the molding on the receiver pins.
You should wire the receiver as specified on my website but it's possible that some damage has been done in the meantime....
Also be sure that you use the correct inputs for receiver and emitter.

But I still don't see why an emitter or receiver could block the entire PIC.
Unless you don't have a good 5V supply, in this case the power from the comm port is enough to operate the PIC with minimum load but adding incorrectly wired "stuff" generates high current and thus the power to the PIC drops too low causing exactly your problem.
