I currently have 3 Audreys (with a usb ethernet adapter) on my LAN connected to a router, PC, and cable modem. In place of several high-end touchscreen remotes (Pronto, etc.)I hope to use the Audrey touchscreens to send commands to a PC that could control X10 devices as well instruct an IR transceiver to control all AV equipment in the main room.
(The satellite and DVD players already distribute signal throughout the house, but right now we use a multitude of cheap remote controls & several IR/RF senders.)

Completely do-able, fairly easily. I think the best way: set up a webserver, have the Audreys hit it by default. You could set up several pages; per device cluster or per room. Have buttons on the page execute perl cgi scripts or php code to send a TCP/IP command to Girder. Bob's your uncle.

As you can guess, I am totally new to this forum (and software). Will this work:
3COM's recently discontinued i-appliance (originally $499) is now available on ebay and for $89 at Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com./applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=M975-9000). The units have a 7.8" 640X480 touchscreen. The software on AUdrey is currently limited to a modified version of QNX 6.1 but has been hacked to enable shell access and ftp control.Hacked Audrey 1 (http://www.sowbug.com/audrey/) Hacked Adurey 2 (http://www.audreyhacking.com/)
You could use an unmodified audrey to easily access web pages. With the expertise on this board, I thought using these for the following might be interesting:

Let me know if I am way off-base. At least I can cheaply access the internet & email from all over the house (this puts all members of my family in different rooms burning up bandwidth with no fighting), but I would love for these neat units to do much more.

OK, that sounds great... Where the heck can I get a crash course in perl script? I am willing to read and research. This sounds like something anyone with experience could whip up in minutes, but i have none. SO, guide me to a resource, O' mentor.
BTW, Bob's my cousin.
