COM is used if any othe program (including) drivers read dat form this port. So if you install any softwre to enable you remote receiver this software read from COM port and girder do not open COM. Try to uninstall any athe softwre tah can use COM port

Girder (or anything else I have) can not open the com port for my RealMagic receiver.

I have used the RealMagic receiver on my desktop computer with no problems at all. I tried to use it on my laptop and am losing untold ammounts of hair over this.

I have tried using girder with the generic serial hardware plugin as well as the ctinfra server (even a prog called serialwatcher) but all have told me that they cannot open the com port. I have tried these programs with all the ports but the same result.

The RealMagic reciever is firmly connected (no loose cable) and even responds to ir signals by flashing a red LED when I send it a command.

As best as I can tell, I only have one external com port on the computer. There is an internal modem which (according to Device Manager) is connected to com 2. Device Manager also confirms that com 1 is a valid serial port. I am running everything on a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop with Windows 98.

could anyone help me past this problem?

Well, I found out what the problem was. It turns out that the palm pilot Hotsync manager (which runs minimized) is constantly holding onto the serial port even when not performing a sync operation. Once I closed the Hotsync manager, everything worked fine.

Hi, i do not say i've the answer for you but you say:
Girder (or anything else I have) can not open the com port for my RealMagic receiver.

I had the same problem for a few minutes with my new Irman. When i saw Girder i wanted to use it as soon as possible. So i installed the Irman software and Girder. Girder gave the same problem like you say. I tried to set an different comport in girder, but that did not work afcourse.( file > settings - tab hardware plugins - select hardware plugin - settings)
Than i tried only girder and enabled the input device....IT worked.

So to make a short story long, use only girder and than find the good comport.

If that does not work.... good luck because i'm also a newbie at this.
