Yes and No mate.

I have the SiteCom Fast USB Irda device running on windows 2000. As long as you have a COM port assigned to it then yes it will work.

The problem with Windows ME, 2000 and XP is that Microsoft removed IRcomm from the Irda specs so it no longer assigned a COM port.

If you are using these operating systems then you will need to obtain a patch (there are several around) to add IRcomm. If you cant find one let me know and I will send you IBM's IR driver which will work.

Hi Nick,

Windows 98SE has the SAME kernal as Windows ME. It uses VIRTUAL COM ports and not real ones. This is why it's not working.

Have a look at the IBM support pages HTTP://WWW.IBM.COM/SUPPORT for infrared support or IRDA. I am not in the office today so I dont have access to the internal database for the exact link. There is a program called IBM Infrared Device. This disables the Microsoft driver and replaces it with IBMs own driver which does have a true COM port.

All the best

John

I will post it sometime over the weekend if I get a chance folks. Check back here.

OK folks, here is the replacement ircomm driver for Windows 2000. It may and should work on 98SE and ME but I have not tried it.

http://www.btinternet.com/~girder.mirror/IrCommV1011.zip

If the link is dead when you click on it then it means I have not FTP'd it coz me at work  so try again in a few hours....

I am sorry but I cannot provide any support on this driver due to an NDA.

Hope it works OK for you guy's.

You need to use the irda drive m8. Then go into the wireless control panel and disable the send/receive files option.

I tried this and it worked OK.

And I know there was a newer version of the driver m8, I just uploaded the wrong one

Does anyone know if Girder supports USB IrDA devices? I have one and I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use to control my computer via a remote controler. Thanks!

I'm running Windows ME, and I would really appreciate it if you tell me where I could find a patch which would enable IRcomm! Thanks a lot man!

I cannot contribute much to this problem other than give details of my similar request.

I have an IRWave 520U USB IR device that talks nicely to my Nokia phone and Palm Pilot. It claims to be USB 1.1 and IRDA 1.0 & 1.1 compliant. When installed it identifies itself as a KC-180 by KC Technology, Inc.

The IRWave installation sets up a Virtual serial support on Com4 (which is unused on my PC) however although it is possible to enable the device in Girder, nothing gets through to the indicator bottom right of Girder's screen (I've tried several remotes and a Palm Pilot).

The Help warns against expecting the IrDA driver to work but I also got exactly the same results with Valery Karkachev's Generic serial based IR receiver.

My device installs two sets of drivers - one for the USB (WDM) and the other for the IrDA Network NDIS component. I guess it is technically possible to write something that would talk to the former although that is a long way past my skills! If anybody wants to try, I would be pleased to forward the relevent .inf and .sys file.

Regards,

Nick

I'm using Win98SE which does have MS' infrared communications driver and sets up a 'virtual infrared Com Port' driver on Com4. From reading the 'Help' this driver is not expected to work and should be disabled (and in any case setting Girder to talk to Com4, as I said above, doesn't seem to work)

Is this the driver you are referring to or is it another driver you are suggesting I use?

Thanks in advance

Hi John,

I've looked on the IBM site but couldn't find the download - really appreciate a further pointer.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hmmm. I gave that driver a try. No go. It assigned itself to com port 4, and I've tried the uir/irman and the irda driver. Am I doing something wrong/stupid?

BTW: There's actually a newer version of that driver. I found it about a week ago or so. I'll post a link if I can find it.

Did all of that. Turned off the imaging cap's (unchecked all check boxes), installed that driver, it sits on com4. Tried the irda driver and the uir/irman driver in girder and neither work. Go to learn event and the program just sits there. Must be something else you have to do.
