10' at 56k. 50' at 9.6k. High quality cables could extend that to 100-150'. There are serial extenders that can drive that up to 4000'.

You should be able to walk into any computer store on earth and buy a 'serial' cable that will work. They are often referered to as 'RS232' cables, but are technically really 'EIA232' cables, but very few people know that. Just make sure you have the genders and number of pins correct on each end and you should be fine. There are 2 standard connector types, 9 pin and 25 pin. They are referred to as DB9 and DB25, respectivley. Techincally, a DB9 is a RS232 connector, and a DB25 is a RS232C connector; but once again, very few people know that.

thanks!
Do you know what these cables are called..? They always have names with cryptic number and letter combinations. I just found this:

"Please use a straight-through serial cable (not a null modem one). The cable can be very long, distances of 15 meter have been reached. If you make your own cable you need one with 5 different wires on pin
2,3,4,5 en 7" which means i cant just get any serial cable..
