I'm not helping a lot by writing this, but I use Windows suspend-mode (that can be triggered from within Girder) to put the computer down.
Then, I've learn the "ctrl" key from my IR keyboard to my learning remote.
This is kind of a "Wake on keyboard" wake-up feature. Works like a charm.
I haven't tried to do the same thing with my RealMagic remote (connected on a COM port). I would probably encounter the same problem you have.

Not power on but maybe pull it out of power saving mode.
Look in your BIOS settings or ACPI or APM or whatever for the "wake on ..." entries in the power saving stuff. There may be a "wake on COM" option and it may work.
Not real definative as I've not used this option and it may not be on all machines. Sorry.

Even WAKE ON com will not work on most desktop units. Sad fact is, most desktop and tower pc's contain parts that do not support advanced power management. If you have a laptop..then you've got a good shot at achieving it. But most desktop graphics cards today do not support hibernation.
To see what I mean, and if you can hibernate.. Go into control panel and select POWER OPTIONS. Then on the last tab, select ENABLE HIBERNATE SUPPORT. Windows will most likely shoot out some errors or info windows telling you this or that device doesn't support hibernate. Just uncheck ENABLE HIBERNATE SUPPORT and your back where you began. But now you know why you can't hibernate.

You could try a X10 type system and ask in the X10 forums. But the age old problem is.. Just turning power on to your pc won't make it boot. So in the end, your probably stuck like me...
P.s. I hate X10, so I never tried that path.

I can try, but I'm afraid it will not work since I read some time ago that the DVBs drivers don't support standby. Therefor my question if we could find some way to power on. Especially for HTPC type of products this would be very usefull.

Hmm. I don't have the hybernate option ;( I'm using W2K in SMP mode. Maybe that's the reason.

In response to suggestion of X10 system:
You can make a pc boot just by turning the power on. ATX motherboards have a 'power on resume' option. It is designed for power cuts really, but you can use it to turn your computer on when the power is switched on. I just flick a socket on from the wall and my pc powers up - because it is setup to resume after power failure. This means you can still turn off your computer like normal, its just when you reapply power it will boot.

I'm using a relay closure on the power button. Close the relay for 1 second and open it back up. Voila! PC powers on. Simply 'Y' into the power button wires.
