What IR device are you using on your pc ?
Obviously, a solution can be to use an IR keyboard and learn the "ctrl" key for instance to your learning (I hope) remote.
Put Windows in standby .. a keyboard event will wake it up for sure.
So please describe a bit more your hardware. This is highly dependant on this.

You may want to check out the UIRT forum - the UIRT2 design is capable of utilising WOL power and functionality to turn a PC on when an IR code is received.

Does anyone know how to wakeup from standby with a remote control (and Girder).
Like I can wakeup my system with a mouse, I would like to do that with my RC.
Thanks; great piece of software!!

I'm also looking for a solution to the "wake from standby" problem. I am using WinLIRC, Windows XP, a Dell Dimension 4400 (which does not provide a "wake from COM" option), a non-learning Sony DVD receiver remote, and an IR receiver made by Thomas Schmid-Lindner (www.zapway.de). If no easy (and cheap  ) solution is available, should I simply configure my system to NEVER standby?
