HD44780 software backlight contrast control?

Is there a way to make the HD44780's backlight controlled by software?

should work with every display (except 4*40)

would the girder LCD plugin accept it?
I mean, there is a signal running from one output pin of the LPT port, this needs to be set to high for the light to be on, so we would require some software support...

its pretty interesting, none the less.

I'll fool around the LCD plugin to see if I can control anything of that...

I don't see any backlight options within the plugin when using a HD44780 - how does it work?

under configuration - backlight (should be always on when using a 4*40-char device)
