Does anyone know any way to have girder and the time server plugin cause a computer already in standby to resume from such a state? or is this too much wishful thinking?

I think this will be hard to do as suggested (Girder is not 'running' when the computer is in standby mode)... but you could look into the Windows Task Scheduler for a solution

The Task Scheduler can wake-up a computer (From sleep or hibernation) at a time of your choosing... The question now becomes, how to best interface with this application (The answer probably depends on which version of Girder you're running: as I don't have the latest girder release, COM objects are out of reach and I'd use a program such as JT.exe with its command line options)
