Ok,

IR remotes do not work with IRDA ports. Thee are technological reasons for this. To use remotes you need an IR receiver or transceiver.

UIR - Universal Infra-red Receiver. There are pages on the web that will tell you how to build one of these. Alternatively you can buy a commercial UIR such as the IRMAN from http://www.evation.com for around $50 shipped. There are other commercial products available too.

UIRT - Universal Infra-red Transceiver. These are currently DIY only, and not really Universal yet..Most of them tend to be compatible with UIR software for the receiver part.

Right - I'm a total novice when it comes to remotes / pc / girder and need some info:

PC has irda connection built in (as in laptop irda interface) - this connection recognises the nokia 6210 ir connection and the connection from another computer (i.e. the irda logo appears by the clock on the taskbar on both computers).. and subsequently we can transfer files between them.

Now, trying to get the software (girder in this case) to recognise a remote control - tried the 'all-for-one' urc 7550 and a NAD remote - doesn't seem to work in all cases. I've switched the software to IRDA and selected the correct com port. I've then enabled the device through Girder and it's says the device is enabled - but won't recognise ir codes from the remotes.

So, basically, my questions are;

1. Do remotes for TVs / DVDs / CDs work with IRDA for computers (correct frequency etc)? If not, then which remotes do work with Girder?

2. Have I missed something in setting up the software / device drivers on Windows ME?

3. is there other software out there than can make it work?

Sorry for the long post, this is for a project of mine at work.

Many thanks in advance,

Chris.
