In the serial plugin, did you enable "modem events" in the receive properties? This should show DCD, Ring, CTS and DSR events.

I don't know how your would connect this directly to a serial port. Sorry.

you could do it. theoretically. but I think the systems+girder's latency is probably to long to get relieable results.
We have one of these at work (at least a simmilar device) that's directly connected to a 1MHz 8051. yes, I know, it is lot slower than today's pcs, but it doesn't have so many layers to pass, the decoding is directly in the interrupt service routine, it's coded in assembler, and it still doesn't work if you try to turn the wheel too fast.

Is there a way to control girder with simple push buttons connected to the serial port ? (or game port)
I tried the serial port plugin but i don't get it working.
I have a plugin for winamp that can handle buttons on the serial port but it only allows some basic actions in winamp.

All buttons are connected to DTR (pin4) and an other pin, see the list below.
button1 pin4 - pin1 (DCD)
button2 pin4 - pin6 (DSR)
button3 pin4 - pin8 (CTS)
button4 pin4 - pin9 (RI)
more info about the winamp app.

the image shows the blockwave by Clockwise, by counter clockwise this blockwave is inverted.
Is there anyway i can connect this directly with a serial port to the pc and girder understand the commands ?
