View Full Version : NetRemote / Girder example files....where?

The NetRemote / Girder combo seems very nice indeed. But before I go out and buy a Pocket PC, is it possible to have a peek at what it is capable of?
I already have 2 PC's (one of them being a HTPC) and a wireless LAN, so what I am looking for is something that controls say WinAmp and WinDVD...hopefully with some feedback of artist / song title of my mp3 collection.
Anyone?

TorAtle,
There is a Windows (Win32) version of NetRemote which you can run on an existing PC. You can either use this to evaluate the PPC version, or some people with tablet PC's just just use it with larger CCF panel sizes.

I am currently trying out the Win32 version of NetRemote. What I need is a .gml and .ccf file to see how it performs.
Thanks in advance.

Oh, sorry - my answer was a bit redundant then.
What do you want to try out? Maybe someone can donate you their half finished work? Tor posted his Zoomplayer CCF/GML on the AVS forums a while ago. LDJ will give you a feel for feedback - if you have and ripped DVD's or DVD Profiler.
I'm afraid there are no real "polished" examples - everything is in a state of flux. As soon as we have something nearly finished, Ben gives us a cool new feature and we start ripping up our files again.

TorAtle:
Send me an email to kdwoodrow @ hotmail.com and I'd be happy to send you my ccf and gml combo. Like Gavin says, it's a work in progress. But it's sufficiently finished that I use it every day.
PC apps include TheaterTek, Holo3DGraph, and Media Center 9. External components include an Anthem AVM-2 pre/pro, Sony DVP-NS755P SACD/DVD player, Hughes GXECBOT DirecTiVo, Panny plasma TV, and a Sony VCR. External devices are controlled via IR and serial connections. The ccf is written with the actual codes in the Macro panels with aliases to the Device panels. I'll eventually be replacing the device panels with custom graphics from Mario Cascio to give it that professional look.
Hopefully other folks will be willing to share their combos as well. I still think we need a place to upload files on the forum.

Mastiff - wow, that went right over my head. :D
Wonder if you had a written document of how you have your muti-zone setup installed. Equipment list, extra soundcards and their setup, wiring, speakers, etc? It would be really be helpful to me as I think I am going to be doing that kind of thing (whole house audio) myself.
Just got my HTPC put back together and it screems now.... ready to move on to more difficult hobby/ fun activities. -Carl

Carl:
Check out Tor's website. It has a comprehensive discussion of his setup and it's in English!

TorAtle: I send you that email when I get home to my HTPC.

Carl (and others),
Once I have time to get back to the user guide, I will be adding a link and description to what Mastiff has accomplished.

Carl, yeah, that was a bit of norwegian. With a name like Tor Atle the guy has to understand that! And Ken's right, everything you need is on my webpage (as well as my pride and joy, the home theater). You'll see complete equipment list, with software and hardware. I'll write a description of how I did it next weekend. This weekend went into upgrading the HT, sound proofing the HTPC and Internet server and upgrading my website on those changes. If I do more this week I'm afraid my wife will call a divorce lawyer, and my kids will start calling me "sir"!

You are not mocking my name, are you??
You are very welcome sending me your files as well. Would be interesting to have a look.
I read something about the PDA needing to connect to the LAN if you hadn't used the remote for a while. Is this delay annoying? How long are we talking about?

I sure hope you're norwegian or at least scandinavian, if not you would not understand what I wrote you. And it takes from 5-10 sec to reconnect, it depends on distance to the access point, type of card, moonphase and wether you buried a cat last thursday night. :D

I live in Oslo, so you're right on.
5-10 secs...ouch. That's alot. Is there no way of keeping the connection?

Sure. Keep your PPC on all the time... When I use it as a HT (you have seen my HT pages, right?) remote I just set it to kill the lights after 10 sec and never turn itself off. Unfortunately I have had problems with the backlight, but the shop promised me that they have fixed it and will send it back to me this week. I can always hope...

I agree. Keeping it on will help. One of the things I'm looking to do in the short future is have a key to turn backlighting on/off, and to have a built-in shutdown timer in NetRemote. The timer is not something I -want- to do, but it seems you can only set the unit to power off up to 30 minutes. I have a real fear of leaving NetRemote on, and forgetting to turn it off after a long movie, and then the thing being -dead- the next time I need to use it.
I'm thinking about finding someplace with a generous return policy and picking up a bluetooth access point and CF card to see if bluetooth connects any faster. It would also be interesting to see if 802.11g is any better.

I tried BT in the beginning. Neither faster nor more reliable. I'd forget about it if I was you. 8)

I don't know how this type of network ...eh..works, but is there some sort of polling involved?

Only using Media Jukebox / Media Center. NetRemote polls every second for updated information (if you're on the control screen where the information is displayed).

WickedEwok -
got the files from Ken just now and I really like what I see!! As I told Ken, the possibility of controlling Media Jukebox with a PDA is almost worth buying one...just for this feature.
I had a party here the other night, and since I was waiting for my new dual output graphics card it meant that we had to fire up the projector to select new songs (the plasma would have been better but wasn't connected to the PC at the time). Needless to say there were much laughter about my gear and comments like 'whatever happened to keeping it simple' :D Well just they wait till next time when I pass that PDA around and let them select!!!
